An updated Bohemian Index from the Martin Prosperity Institute. The index charts the concentration of working artists, musicians, writers, designers, and entertainers across metropolitan areas. It measures it as a location quotient, which basically compares regional employment to the national norm, based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau and StatsCan. The table below shows the 10 most and 10 least bohemian large metros -- those with more than one million people -- in the U.S and Canada:

^Rail can perform quality-of-life miracles even in low density sprawlers.  Salt Lake City is a community that has been transformed since its first light rail line opened a decade ago.

There is a feedback loop condition that reinforces Jacksonville's position on all these failing indeces. The Boho index counts artist/musicians/writers/etc who earn their living full time at their craft. To support that we need an economy with disposable income to spend money on the theatre or paintinginstead of the necessities of subsistence. Like New Orleans our Bohemians have to bus tables and bag groceries so they dont slip from creative class to the starving class. Artists are the frogs of our economic ecosystem. Their survival is a harbinger of what is to come for the rest of our city.
