JACKSONVILLE, Fla., -- Investigators are on the scene of a possible hate crime at a Jacksonville mosque.

Worshipers report hearing a loud noise outside the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida, according to a fire department investigator.

It happened just after 9:30 pm Monday, during preparations for the evening prayer known as isha, according to a press release from The Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Worshipers used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire caused by the explosion.  There are no reported injuries.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including the state fire marshal, the ATF and FBI along with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the Jacksonville Fire Department.

"A possible bias-motivated attack on a house of worship should be of great concern to Americans of all faiths, and particularly to our nation's religious and political leaders," said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad.  "Those who shape public opinion must begin to speak out against the rising level of anti-Muslim sentiment in our society."

No word if 'Don' is praying to his god for the safety and well-being of these evening worshipers.

This is insane.  A bomb at a mosque? Totally unreal.  What happened to picketing? I hope the culprits are apprehended and that the Muslims can demonstrate some of that peace and forgiveness they believe in.  This shows total disrespect and intolerance by whomever did this.

I am a devout Christian by the way, but I don't condone hatred or violence to any people.  Muslims are down with JC too you know.

Ehh,this is how it started in my hometown just before war.
We had 16 mosques around city, most dated back to 15/16 century and one day they started throwing grenades in yard...they would drive by with car and just throw a grenade into yard.
When war started then they came with entire truck of explosive and blew entire mosque, but it failed to destroy completely so they came back next day and repeated process. Then they brought machines and trucks, loaded half of remains and dump it in river and other half took it to landfill and cover it with trash so nobody can find it.They turned 16 century mosques into parking lots.

After that, city government passed law which bans any kind of construction in place of destroyed mosques or around, punishable by fine and jail time.
Even Nazis didn't bother to go that far.
After war, most people who did or supported this act STUPID now,as they dont know anything about that.

In my hometown total of 16 mosques destroyed to ground and entire Bosnia around 950.

This is how it looked on May 7 2001 (9 years ago) and before 9/11 when they tried to have ceremony to raise one of those mosques back.Serbs came, protested, destroyed everything and even managed to kill one older man who couldn't protect himself.

On second thought that mosque is kinda ugly, maybe it was some loner with picky taste for architecture.

I seriously doubt this is the beginnings of a new crusade. Equally unlikely is that this is the act of a Christian. (Not that the perp might not claim as much)

It does make me cringe at the thought of this idiocy besmirching the name of my hometown even furhter.

Concur.  And concur.

No one likes negative press.

I should also add the fact that this does, in my opinion, constitute an act of terrorism. Our leaders should be shouting from the rooftops in the national media, condemning this act.

I don't know the scope of this attack, which sounds like more of an attempt to scare the folks that go to the Mosque. It might have been intended to do physical harm to the people inside.

We can be sure that if it was suspected that a Muslim had set a bomb somewhere in the city, this would be a national story.

Fair is fair. I smell a double standard and it stinks.

Bos has a point.  If this sort of thing isn't stomped on hard right at the first incidence, then other creeps think that society or the government approves and stuff starts to escalate.  Of course, where he came from, the government DID approve.

Completely agree.

Not much of a bomb. That building is cast in place concrete with brick veneer.  True the HM door may not be a "blast" door but still not much of a bomb.

FCN just had a story that some of the City Councilmen, including the man who represents the district the mosque is in, did not know it happened. It had been more than 24 hours.
