Chamber of Commerce building in need of repair

Problems with the first-floor slab at the downtown headquarters of the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce have resulted in all employees being moved off that floor and onto the second and third floors.

A downstairs restroom has been closed for some time, but officials made the decision to move all first-floor employees because of an uneven slab.

The structure, which sits at the northern foot of the Main Street bridge, was completed in 1981. Designed by the Haskell Co. and built by Robert Gay Construction Co.

It sounds like differential pile settlement.
However, it seems odd that it would occur so long after the construction of the building.
Has there been construction activity nearby, like access ramp work for the Main Street Bridge, in recent years?

Ock tells us there is a fault line somewhere near Jax.

True, the fault's we know of come down from South Carolina through coastal Georgia and maybe? die off or go deep on Jacksonville's northside.  Otherwise a fault that has shown it's self capable of destruction is the St. Augustine Fault, one that did some serious damage in pioneer times.

I suspect the CofC building's troubles lay in the fact that it is built on the wrong side of a sweeping bend in the river on fill.  That fill, the sea walls, Landing etc... have to be assaulted night and day by the scour of the river in that narrow and swift channel. Build a scale model house on dirt and hit it with the garden hose and you'll get a vivid picture of what is going on beneath our feet.
