I'm glad some things going on in town resemble thigs that take place in a real city.  The article uses the therm "counterculture".  One can only hope this "counterculture" is a significant part of Jax's population.

QuoteRanne said he and his girlfriend, Marianne Purcell, spent eight months transforming an abandoned "dump" of a building in Springfield into Shantytown Pub. They had no capital.

"It was $100 at a time," he said, "A chair here, a table there."

Imagine how long it would take if they had to purchase a vacant lot, develop construction documents, get concurrency, permits, construct a building from scratch and then furnish and stock it?

On a community planning level, all of Ian's projects would be impossible without the presence of existing building stock.  So when we talk about the preservation of existing building fabric in the urban core, keep in mind that slowing grass roots economic revitalization is a major negative of continued demolition.

This is great.  I've been looking for a place to buy records in this town other than thrift stores.

Ian sounds like a real mover and a shaker.  That's great that he is having so much success, especially in this market.  I hope our paths cross sometime soon.

This is awesome!  Can't wait to pick up some new Vinyl.  Can you say Frank Zappa?

QuoteHes also one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet, zissou.

Absolutely!  I have been a fan for a long time!
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Ian is a great guy and I really hope he can make it work. Jacksonville has had some legendary record stores over the years and it really brings some culture to the neighborhood.
