I saw a horizontal parking sign mounted on the side of the Ed Ball Building today. It is on the Monroe St side facing the Federal Courthouse Building. Seems like someone is figuring this out. It lights up at night. Hopefully, lake will post the picture I sent him, since I do not know how to post pictures.

Why for?

No such thing as modern signage in the core?  Is there that archaic signage law still in place?  No one's ballsy enough to flout that rule in the core?

Have I missed something here? :)

Well all I see is a sign that would likely be cited for violating the downtown sign ordinance, if it weren't owned by COJ.

To be fair, this stuff has been in the works for years.  We made a huge fuss about this when we first started this site four years ago.  A section of our Lighting Laura Street presentation also focused on parking signage.

I'm glad to see things progress but it does show how long it takes for concepts and ideas to become reality in Jacksonville.

We could use some large signs saying... "Street metered parking FREE after 6PM and on weekends"
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Stephen's right.  Very nice photoshop work FSUJax!

I wish I had those skills! haha. On a more serious note, I do not believe the current sign ordinance prohibits signs like these in Downtown.

Doctor_K

If it doesn't, why are there not any/more?

That sign would be prohibited, except by special exception (which they wouldn't grant) if it weren't owned by COJ, as it is of a type that is outright prohibited without one, and it doesn't meet the setback requirements;

QuoteSec. 656.1333.   Signs permitted.
* * *
(f)   Pylon/pole, roof and monument signs: Allowed only by special exception approved by the Downtown Development Authority Review Board using the criteria set forth in subsection (2) of this Section. Unless otherwise provided in the special exception, all pylon/pole signs shall meet the setback requirements of Section 656.1303(i)

Well, that is, unless you're Humana or Modis or Wachovia and they think they're going to make $$$$$$$$ off of you. Then they'll approve an obnoxious 40-foot-high lighted sign plastered on all sides of your building, that you can see for 20 miles in all directions. But Joe Schmoe with his deli, well, he's just outta luck.

So out of luck, in fact, that COJ just went around the whole city randomly fining restaurants and other businesses for violating our arcane sign ordinances, including one small restaurant owner $255 for hanging a banner to advertise his "All U Can Eat Snow Crab" event;
