Last night an attempt was made to burn down the Riverside Primitive Baptist Church on Dellwood Ave. The church is at the end of Dellwood were it dead ends against I-95.

Palm fronds were set on fire and pushed under the church through an access panel. JFRD fire investigators think that the fire then spread into the joists and beams under the church and burned slowly there all night. There was deep char on the beams. The fire was discovered this morning when members arrived to open the church for services and discovered the inside of the church full of smoke.

It is probable that had the fire been set on any other night, it would finally have grown and destroyed this historic church. The extent of the damage to the structure of the church and damage by the smoke is not known at this time.

Another fire was set in palm fronds by storage buildings at the rear of the church, but burned itself out without spreading.
When all else fails hug the dog.
