ORLANDO, Fla. -- A new proposal could make overhead gondolas part of Central Florida's mass transportation system.

State Representative Darren Soto of Orlando, and Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart just returned from a trip to Colombia to see its gondola system.

Once the SunRail is completed from Volusia County to Osceola County in 2010, gondola lines could be set up to help commuters go east and west to areas like Orlando International Airport, Soto said.

Oh yeah, real smart in a state where the winds blow wild nearly every day, and don't get me started on hurricane/wet season storms.
Jacksonville: We're not vertically challenged, just horizontally gifted!

Can't wait to see Ock's response. This seems kind of silly to me. Remember Balanky's proposal for gondola's in Downtown?

This is one of the most absurd ideas I have heard in a while.

It seems gondolas only make sense in a place with change in elevation... and to me it's more like an attraction than mode of public transit.

Orlando is obviously flat. Why would anyone take a horizontal gondola ride?
And though I long to embrace, I will not replace my priorities: humour, opinion, a sense of compassion, creativity and a distaste for fashion.

It might be a cheaper than rail solution?

I doubt it would travel at speeds making it an efficient mode for moving people from Downtown to the airport.
It stikes me as a silly notion, but I don't have all the facts.

After reading, the article said 30 MPH. That seems reasonable, but I might take my chances driving if I had the option.

Cheap, quick, fly-over mass transit...  A Skyway without a Skyway, and it works. Shocked? You've got to see it to believe it, the Orlando representative went to Medellin and saw it. UNBELIEVABLE, and this is in the two poorest communities in the Medellin Metro (thus we don't charge them a fare).

How about across the river... from Metro Park to a development at the old JEA power station site
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Can they be operated in a lightening storm?

See the link I posted above.

I do not like this one... you can walk across main and acosta...

A connection from Metro to the san marco riverwalk would be pretty cool...

I would prefer a cannon and a giant net to a gondola.
