I'm sure it isn't - however, that's how some people live, on the westside or elsewhere.  Some people just "ain't got no sense".

Johnny

I hope whoever took the picture also took an opportunity to call the cops...

JeffreyS

Any word on why the photographer did not call the cops.  I am not trying to change who the villians are that would be the adults transporting the children.  I do want to implore my fellow posters if you see children in danger help them or call the police.

When I was a kid, riding in the back of a truck was quite commomplace.

Those seats could be strapped in quite securly from what we can tell from the picture. That would leave only the adult female in danger.

How many times have any of you been outraged when you saw a crew of landscapers riding in the back? Please, live your lives.

I saw this floating around on email the other day.
I would really like to see what kind of precious cargo was riding up front? It would have to be one of the following:

Family Dog(s)
Jesus the second coming
Barack Obama
Tim Tebow

Is the lady wearing a blue-tooth?

And though I long to embrace, I will not replace my priorities: humour, opinion, a sense of compassion, creativity and a distaste for fashion.

Amen. While I agree, its very stupid to do that, its not my life, not my family. I dont want to live in a nanny state.

I know what you're saying, Buckethead, but it's never a good idea to invite trouble, right?   There are still people (more than in the past, it seems) who tend to drive like idiots and that alone poses a danger to someone riding pretty much unprotected in the back of a truck (no seatbelts, no helmet, nothing around you to protect you if that thing rolls).  I've ridden in the back of pickup trucks at different times in my life, but never at highway speeds.  My mother almost ran after us on foot when she saw my entire Girl Scout troop pile in to go to to a marshmallow roast/slumber party, for example.  Just another point of view.

OK, the "typical" lawn crew/garbage men/day laborer riding in a truck bed knowingly does this - they're adults, or rather should be, and can decide for themselves.
Children cannot, and there are laws against this sort of thing.  Especially on an Interstate, which the picture clearly shows.

Exactly. Those kids are in extreme danger due to idiot parents. They should be arrested.

Apparently, it is not against FL law unless Clay county has a specific exception against minors riding regardless of restraint. I can't believe that people think that it is okay to ride in the back of a pick-up...

316.2015, Florida Statutes

(b) It is unlawful for any operator of a pickup truck or flatbed truck to permit a minor child who has not attained 18 years of age to ride upon limited access facilities of the state within the open body of a pickup truck or flatbed truck unless the minor is restrained within the open body in the back of a truck that has been modified to include secure seating and safety restraints to prevent the passenger from being thrown, falling, or jumping from the truck. This paragraph does not apply in a medical emergency if the child is accompanied within the truck by an adult. A county is exempt from this paragraph if the governing body of the county, by majority vote, following a noticed public hearing, votes to exempt the county from this paragraph.

Joe

^ That's for limited access highways only.

It is legal for some minors to ride unrestrained in the back of a pickup on regular streets. I believe you have to be sitting backwards with your back to the cab though. I could look up the age minimum, but I'm lazy. I'm sure those particular kids are too young though.

Either way, what those guys did is illegal since it's a freeway, the kids were too young, and the mom wasn't properly seated.

Subro, 295 does not fall under Clay County's jurisdiction as it stays within Duval County.

That said, it is illegal in this state, and pretty sure all 47 others in the CONUS for this to be done. Had they been pulled over, that wouldn't have been a pretty situation.
