Report all positive news from and for Springfield here, No bashing, name calling or arguing and keep it positive please
- Hogans Creek master plan should be reveiled relatively soon.
- Though Zombie & Burro are relocating (in & out of the 'hood), there is probable interest in the property by another tenant.
- LOTS of new home owners moving in.
- Needed changes are coming to the area's largest & most influential organization, Spar.
- There were 14 home burglaries last January compared to 6 this January.
- www.myspringfield.org is up & running and has the opprotunity to become a fantastic neighborhood website / resource.
- A "Welcome to the Nieghborhood" packet is being finalized, so that new residents can read all we have to offer.
- Fusion is set to serve food (finally!).
- With the conversion of the "A" rated Darnell-Cookman Middle School into both a Middle AND High School, that will give the neighborhood a highly rated High School as well.
- There is significant interest in renovating older houses in the area still.
- New construction houses are still being built, a rare thing these days. Three at this time, that i know of.
- The Southern Living article created a ALOT of interest from outside of the city.
- There will be a ruling one way or another about the contested "rooming house" issue relatively soon.
- Fusion, Uptown Market, and Three Layers were recently named some of the cities best restaurants in this month's Arbus Magazine.
- Mayor Peyton seems intent on focusing on Downtown during the remaining year plus of his term, including the Homeless issue, which is good for Springfield.
- The Main Street Business Enhancement program is set to begin soon.
- SAMBA continues to grow and develop
Give it a rest, please, Stephen. There are plenty of other anti-SPAR threads you can take it to. This is supposed to be good news only. Please take your freedom of speech to one of those other threads. :-)
I hope to see ya'll at the neighborhood clean up planned for next weekend, the SWC Chili Cook-Off (tickets available at Three Layers and one lucky non-profit will win a chunk of change to continue good works in the neighborhood!), and the Springfield Main St. Parade- don't forget First Friday this coming Friday, Miami Vice- which I guess means no socks and lots of pastels....
Uptowngirl, this First Friday is Mardi Gras themed, March is Miami Vice. I expect you to be decked out and representin!
I am seeing a huge influx of young, urban professionals wanting to relocate to Springfield. I find their excitement and energy to be a huge positive for the neighborhood. As I was typing this I got a call from some guys I've been working with who want to bring some interested friends to see the model home today. It's a snowball effect and it's gaining momentum.

I agree with Stephendare in asking what changes? I don't live in Springfield but my daughter and I both have looked more then once at opportunities to own an urban home. Those of us on the outside hear this rapid fire, self consuming, bickering going on, and frankly I don't read it, but it gives me a pretty skewed idea of what Springfield is all about.
Who do we talk to to influence the Hogans Creek Plan... I'm the nut that canoed it, and from the photos of sail boats in the park, it was once much more then it is today...IE:open sewer.
I'm VERY serious about the ability of a certain groups of clubs to build a miniature railroad - 1.5" scale and perhaps 1" scale, plus a landing and small steam launch sailing area on the creek or a pond.

Ock, I see what your saying, BUT, the same 15 people going back & forth on here does not make what Springfield is all about. It's about the 2,3,4 thousand people living in the neighborhood daily, making good things happen(and some not so good). That is the neighborhood, not this forum.
Back to the good news front, there's also a car wash that will soon be opening at 4th & Main. Its great to see new businesses continue to open up along the commercial corridor. Hopefully, this will start a trend with the street's reconstruction now being complete.

- Zoo has that info.
"...what changes?"
- One example: a functional, attractive, and helpful website instead of the woefully out-of-date one in use now. This is the face of the orgnaization is so many ways, and the front door to the neighborhood to so many people researching the area. Major improvents are needed and coming, thankfully.
- another would be 5 fresh faces to the Board. I can speak for 4 out of 5 of them in saying that anyone who thinks that they'll simply be mouth pieces or will be afriad to express their opinion is crazy. That the 4 out of 5 are relatively young doesn't hurt either.
think i mentioned something besides the website, didn't i?
The word 'new' kinda denotes a change does it not?
Please stop trying to poison the well.

First of all, having new faces on the board doesn't mean a damn thing, other than new faces. Secondly, I know I'm reluctant to feel that suddenly things are going to be 'fixed' now that there's new members...it's happened before, where there were several new faces, and when one of them tried their best to get things on the right path...well, they left out of frustration and was encouraged to leave...so don't go telling anyone their crazy because there's new faces. Time will tell if there's any positive changes as a result. The empty elections has not cured what ails spar, as I said, time will tell if they make changes...or not

While driving around this weekend I noticed a large number of historic houses freshly painted and several new renovation started. It seem renovations are gaining momentum as well. gotta love that snowball effect. I do not have official numbers but the neighborhood other than main street and 8th street looks about 3/4 restored or infilled

Stephendare I just want to clarify that the purpose of this threat is to Report all positive news from and for Springfield ;D I feel that there are to many negative posts and thought it would be refreshing to have a thread without any. Your vendetta toward SPAR is well known and may or may not be justified. I don't know? We all know that if SPAR slipped past the event horizon of a black hole and ceased to exist would be good news to you :o but wishing for the downfall of SPAR is not the purpose of this thread. BTW I am not a SPAR member nor am I a member of any other neighborhood group. I do not feel any malice toward you or any other Springfield resident. So please do not feel any toward me.

Springfield heritage center is under construction but it looks like it will be a well of information when its finished and a true asset to the neighborhood,
From what I understand there will be a section dedicated to past resident of each house as well as stories from current and past owner. Could the people that are working on this inform us what else will be in the site.

Sigma, the garden is full now too!
Knowing that you made a difference by perserving the environment and perserving history
Where is the "Springfield Est. 1869" sign featured on the Heritage Center website? The background looks like the Barnett house on 1st St. but I didn't recall having seen the sign before. Thanks!
It's kind of on the corner across 1st Street from the Pearl. There's another one near 4th and Pearl Street. It's not a huge sculpture...about the size of a street sign.

Me and the wife went to Wafaa and Mikes today and were impressed with both the taste and portion sizes. She ordered the Chicken Gyro and I got the Philly Cheese Steak. Very good, definitely adding them to the lunch rotation. Up next, City Kidz.

Wacca pilatka, I took the photo of the sign and the Barnett building, there are three sculptures, at 1st and Main, at 4th and Pearl and just beyond the park at Boulevard and 8th. They were done by The Woman's Club and HSCC using a Mayor's matching grant. The sculptor was David Ponsler (look him up on the web) but his price was much higher than the grant allowed. He came here and fell in love with the place and did the sculptures for the money the clubs had. He has a magnificent web page, he also came to live here for a while. the three stantions of each sculpture represent the past, present and future.
I took the photo on the SHEC web page. Anyone interested in joining? Rita paid for that web

I have a lot of Springfield touring to do next time I am in town.
When they did the first four blocks of Main I asked GAI - the engineering consultants - if the one at 1st and Main could be moved into the median. They said at some point the blocks between State and 1st were going to be done and the better place for it would be at State and Main. The problem here is the Klutho bridge which needs restoration badly, especially the under pinings. Maybe we could fund raise to get Ponsler or someone to put a sculpture in one of the medians maybe around 7th, or maybe we could run a competition on designs and throw it open. When they took the ties out of the street on the first four blocks I thought they could be used for a sculpture but, contamination got in the way. Two pieces were polished, on given to Mayor Delaney and one is in the SPAR office.

I have heard of a ghost that is living in a warehouse around there.
It looks like 3 layers is hopping tonight. I wish I had time to stop by.
Yea, my wife swears there's a spirit in our house. benign, i guess.
she's always been sensitive to that kinda thing.
We had some very strange thing happen while we where restoring our house. The spirits are ether happy with what we did to the house or they have moved on.
It is said the most haunted house in Springfield is Tom Minette's at 2nd and Laura, the Pink Palace. A ghost tour becomes just a house tour, since our ghosts do not appear on demand, though SPAR did set up a haunted house one year. It was very successful but the fire dept. shut them down. Maybe instead of a tour Tom Minette would allow a group of people to camp out in his house, for one night, it is certainly big enough and then maybe you would see what you would see. It could be done as a fund raiser for a good cause, maybe Oasis.
First Friday was a blast, It looks like a great time was had by all. Happy mardi gras

I just took a drive to the BP at 8Th and Liberty. I don't know if its the weather or what but it is dead no one is standing around. maybe the ninjas did some good.
hope so

- yea, i think Market & E. 4th are going to be 2 of his first houses.....
No, not really. Pure speculation on my part, but SRG may have some extra lots to sell to another builder. Happens all the time. I just hope the houses look different so we have more variety.
Fusion now serving lunch! On Pearl just north of 8th.
None of the above. I happened to stop in the SPAR office while the builder and Realtor were there talking to Louise. It was the first time I had met either one of them. During the conversation he stated that he had built in Atlanta before comng to Jax. I asked him if he knew Mack and he said no but when I told him the name of SRG's co. in ATL he said that he had built near one of their developments. This new builder is bringing 3 houses in front of the HPC this month for approval. I asked where the lots were and they told me. Before you guys get the whole conspiracy theory going, none of the three lots belonged to SRG. The new builders plans are very nice. Similiar to SRG but still different. The plans showed very nice detail. The details will be heard at HPC so if anyone is interested they should attend the hearing. I am glad that others want to build in Springfield, it allows for more homes to be built at one time and helps the revitalization move faster. Strider built two new homes that were beautiful and another builder is in the process of building his second home along with ONH's new construction. In the past I will admit I was wrried about ONH but the homes they built turned ut nicely. Sooo, the more the merrier.
Oh, I think I missed the point Stephen. The builder from N. Carolina that has been talking to SRG was referred here by someone else. They have been building very expensive, architecturally detailed homes that are hard to find buyers for and get financed in this market so they were looking to branch out. Builders build, it's what they do, so when their market changes they work to find a way to keep building. That guy has shown an interest in moving here and building in the neighbrhood but nothing concrete yet. Again, I think it would be great for Springfield. I think many builders are seeing that continued suburban sprawl is not going to work right now and are starting to focus on infill.
Sorry, I only met them once, I believe it is S. Carolina

Where have you seen the plans? The previous owner had plans to add a 2nd floor apartment and garden terrace and make the 1st floor his photography studio. He never could get the funding I guess.
The plans were shown at the HPC several months ago. Art Deco style with proposed platinum Leed certification.

It is Jack Meeks and JoAnn Tredenick.. Sigma, Jensen Hande always said he had plans, but nobody ever saw them. I don't think he truly had any real intention on building here. He always told me about them but never showed anything.. He got what he wanted from the property, a nice profit for sitting on it and putting nothing into it...

I just talked to Prudential Network Realty about the new houses in Springfield it sounds like the builder is building historically accurate house that will be close to what the original style was like at the turn of the century.
Here is an idea why don't we make a miniature version of the 1888 Sub-Tropical Exposition in a local park Something like a 1/4 scale version. I could be like a tavern on the green (I know the one in new york is now out of buisness)

This is a great idea, and one I hope Springfield will someday incorporate into its own heritage museum. Some conversations have been had b/w SPAR and SHEC re: a museum on Main, but these have not gone far yet due to time/funding resources (same song, different great idea). If you'd like to participate in moving a museum forward, be sure to contact SPAR or SHEC and volunteer to help!
What is the contact info for SHEC? That's a project I'd love to be involved with....

The celebrate Springfield festivities are this Saturday, I wish I could be there.
Does anyone know if any of the local collages have an archeology course maybe they could do a dig in Springfield. How about the Spanish American war staging area or the civil war stables.
I think I can see Stephen Dare grinning ear to ear right now.
During the presentation portion of Celebrate Springfield last weekend, Bill Cesery said that he's been approach by a couple developers about building on Main Street.
He also mentioned how a Redell Street project was being seriously considered again.
Jim Burkhart, President of Shands Jacksonville, mentioned that they are considering developing a hotel near Shands as well, somewhere near the Walgreens I believe.

During the presentation portion of Celebrate Springfield last weekend, Bill Cesery said that he's been approach by a couple developers about building on Main Street.
He also mentioned how a Redell Street project was being seriously considered again.

A hotel near Shands would have an interesting impact on the neighborhood, creating oportunities for new related businesses nearby.
Did Cesery provide any specifics on the type of development contemplated for Main Street?
The plan, as it sat a couple of years ago, was the purchase, and redevelop the "bloodiest block" (University Plaza and Lincoln Court) into hotels and retail.
I do not know if this fell apart

It is Jack Meeks and JoAnn Tredenick.. Sigma, Jensen Hande always said he had plans, but nobody ever saw them. I don't think he truly had any real intention on building here. He always told me about them but never showed anything.. He got what he wanted from the property, a nice profit for sitting on it and putting nothing into it...
Jensen's had some great plans for that space, Just decided to live elsewhere. can't say I blame him.
whoops

Can't say you blame him for what??? Not developing an awesome property that he got for dirt cheap? For sitting on a property and letting it decay? What can't you blame him for?? No one gave him a hard time about his plans like some of these other developers (ie. the car wash) because no one ever saw any.. His idea was great, in fact it's almost the same as Meeks idea. I think he got in over his head and didn't realize how much it really costs to renovate an old building and decided to sell it when he realized he couldn't afford to see his idea to fruition and then bitched and moaned that the neighborhood was no good. No one from the hood ever gave him any problems. He got a fine once for the lot being overgrown and the city had a company come in and clean it up, that's the extent of his "problems" from the neighborhood. After that happened, he kept the yard clean and then I did it for him in exchange for using the building.. So, what is it that you can't blame him for?? Us, neighbors were looking forward to him renovating that building and would've helped him any way we could've. That's fine that he decided to go live somewhere else, that's his choice, we don't want anyone that doesn't want to be here..
settle down big guy. no one is dissing on your beloved Springfield...What I am saying was that the cost of him doing the place up far out weighed the cost of selling it and moving to to a place already done.
considering the current economy it was prolly the best decision he ever made.
you guys need to chill out....
I'm not buying that excuse. He bought the place back when banks were throwing money at Springfield and everywhere else.
Something happened with his financing, I just don't remember what. Ingrid Greene was his agent so she could probably tell us more.
Uhh I thought this was supposed to be the positive, no name calling forum about Springfield?

Greetings,
I had some fantastic plans for that property. It killed me to sell it but I had to move on and find somewhere to live.
As far as all the money banks were throwing at Springfield. I couldn't get any of it do to the building's zoning. The building is zoned residential. The banks looked at it and said, NO, this is commercial. I would explain that it's going to be a house/residential. They wouldn't think out of the box.
Never had any problems from the neighbors. Just the anal guy on 7th Street who tattle-tailed on me for some firewood stacked up. The city sent notices to the Walnut address so I never received them. I ended up having to pay 1500.00 to the city for stealing my firewood and mowing the lawn. All the guy had to do was call me and let me know it was bothering him and I would have taken care of it.
Anyone who knows me knew it killed me to not build that place out and be a positive part of the neighborhood. To say otherwise is wrong.
Thanks so much for replying and straightening that out. Now Its coming back to me why the financing was a problem - the zoning!
I do recall the ideas that you had and I thought it was going to be fantastic! I hope you realize that dream.
Project 180 concept that was discussed at Celebrate Springfield was very exciting. I'm thrilled Cesery is working with them.

Would you please describe the Project 180 concept? I unfortunately was not able to attend Celebrate Springfield...
It's a youth organization aimed at at-risk children, mostly in low-income housing projects.
They have an academic, athletic, and healthy living components in which they are, apparently, very successful (some of the stats read were impressive).
I just wanted to address the zoning siuation above in case anyone else runs into that problem. I was selling a duplex that was zoned commercial and the banks were having none of it. The buyers wanted to live in half and rent the other half out. The problem with the financing was that, even though the property was built as, set up and being used as residential it had commercial zoning which would require the property to be rebuilt under commercial guidelines and codes if it was damaged or destroyed. The banks do not want this added liability. I called zoning and was told that this is a pretty common issue in historic districts. The remedy is to have zoning write a letter saying that they would not require the property to be rehabbed or rebuilt under commercial guidelines. Once the liability has been taken off, the lenders usually lighten up.

If I heard correctly, and think I did, of the kids they worked with over a 5 year span:
100% graduated high school
70% went to college
0% teen pregnancies

I would hope everyone knows by know that lawns grow quickly in Florida and need to be mowed regularly. It should not take someone to call. Nothing personal, but we have a neighbor who only mowes once we call him. So I thought I throw that out there as a reminder for people waiting to be called to take action.
A Big Thanks to all who take care of their property without reminder or notice.

Hmmm
From the makers of Peterbrooke, "Sweet Pete's" will be opening soon in Springfield....
Should be very cool: http://myspringfield.org/bb/viewtopic.php?p=2117#p2117
Downtown's loss is our gain!
nice, i'm not a chocolate fan, but i may have to change that now
SPR Chili Cook-offis today....1-4pm, at Three Layers. Sponsered by the Wine Society, benefiting non-profits. Which is very good news.
Also, Mayor Peyton will be at City Kidz Cafe today @ 11am, to cap off a morning celebration of Financial Literacy Day. Channel 4 will be there too. Good news as well.
Congrats to the Springfield Mommies Group for winning the chili cook-off and to both SACARC and the Mommies Group: tied for the peoples choice award!! That sure was some fantastic chili

It was a shame that they didnt open their chocolate factory Downtown. That would have been a pretty awesome project about now.
This doesn't sound like the same thing, unless the location is wrong. All of the buildings on Pearl between 9th & 10th are much smaller than what they we're talking about when they were interested in DT and the Landing. So either this is a new concept or they shrunk the idea down.
Sounds good. Looking forward to it.

Went to Uptown and City Kidz for the first time Saturday after RAM. Been talking it up at work all day. The folks at City Kidz were unbelievably friendly. Im coming back this week for some chicken and waffles!
The turkey avacado and the roast beef at Uptown were ridiculous!
Tried stopping by Three Layers but saw how busy it was and just went home... didn't realize that was for a chili cookoff. Should have stayed :)
Shorty's Seafood is now open at 8th and Pearl. Besides fresh fish and shrimp, crab cakes, and hot fish stew and clam chowder. Yum! I didn't even have to cook last night. They'll filet the fish for you and clean the shrimp if you wish. They are open until 6:00, and I think a little later on weekends.

That's awesome. What type of fish do they have?
Mayport's finest
Mayport Shrimp too?
Yes, the shrimp were yummy. The first day I was there, they also had tilapia, whiting, and croakers that I remember. If you want something special, let them know. They'll try to get it for you.
Did I read that right?? Clam Chowdah??? I'll definitely be checking that out.. Ever since I moved to Florida I've been looking for good chowdah.. I'm convinced that it doesn't exist down here, but I never stop looking...
