I've been wanting to talk about some of the places I like to eat and I don't really think there is a single thread for that. If there is, please let me know.
I like the St Johns Seafood and Steaks in Hilliard because they serve breakfast there -- I think they're the only St Johns in the Jacksonville area which does. They open about 6 or 6:30 am and serve till 10:30 am, seven days a week. Their food is good and their prices reasonable.
Sarah Lee's Bakery and Cafe in Callahan is a great place for something sweet. They're on My Space. Just take a look and see if it doesn't make you hungry.
http://www.myspace.com/slbc2008 (http://www.myspace.com/slbc2008).
I like the Texas Roadhouse on Blanding for steaks. They have prime rib on the weekends, including Friday. I really like that. One of the good things about them is that you can call in to get a reservation. Here's their website: http://www.texasroadhouse.com/home.php?ad=giftcard (http://www.texasroadhouse.com/home.php?ad=giftcard)
We also like going to the restaurants in the Airport mall: Red Lobster for example. They're convenient to us and they're getting an Olive Garden, too.
Where do you like to go?
Vito's on Baymeadows and San Jose is awesome and Stonewood across the street is pretty good as well.
Chicken Koop is probably the best hangover food ever.
In Riverside, Hovan on Margaret is a great place to grab lunch and Mos Fire has awesome meatloaf. I've never actually eaten at Kickbacks but if their food is as good as their beer selection then.. well enough said.
I never make it out to the beaches anymore but there used to be a place out there, I think it was called Cruisers, that had the best burger in Jacksonville.
I've never heard of these places but they sure sound good. Have you tried Five Guys for burgers? I go to the one on IH 95 near JAX International. I've also done mystery shopping at one as well. That was pretty cool -- I got paid for the shop and also reimbursed for the meal. They're pretty good, too. Their fries are cooked in peanut oil and I don't like them, but you can get your burgers made to order -- including mushrooms. Here's their website which has a locator: http://www.fiveguys.com/Content5.aspx?cn=Home (http://www.fiveguys.com/Content5.aspx?cn=Home). I have a GPS in my van and I may be able to locate your suggestions by name.
I just had my first 5 guys burger about a month ago and yes I was impressed! I've been back a few times since.

I really like to read this thread. Just looking at it makes me hungry. I noticed that “Five Guys†has been mentioned several times as well as several other good places to eat. Has anyone else tried the Texas Roadhouse on Blanding near BJ’s and Compass Bank? If you have, I hope you enjoyed it.
If you’re like me and enjoy prime rib, don’t forget they only serve that on Weekends. You can call (904) 213-1000 for a reservation and, that way, you don’t have to wait as long. They’re usually pretty busy. If the restaurants you mention also have reservation numbers, please mention them or make sure they’re available on the website.
I live in Callahan, as you might have guessed from previous posts, and most of these places sound like they are further than I normally like to drive. I think I’m going to have to make several exceptions, though.
Bistro- Biscottis (Avondale)
Dessert- Biscotti's
Burger- Five Guys or the Loop
Subs- Angie's on Beach Blvd in Jax Beach
Atmosphere- The Brick in Avondale
Mexican- Hola on Main St (authentic mex just like La Nop - but the scenery is better - plus outside seating across from Confederate Park)
Sushi- Sushi Cafe (outside seating is great)
Chinese- PF Changs (China Joy in Riverside is reliable for standard take-out)
Thai- Lemongrass in Baymeadows or Thai Basil in San Marco
Pizza- the Loop (for California style) or Al's (Atlantic Beach location is best)
The View- Chart House
Steak- The Brick (if not Morton's or Ruth's Chris)
Breakfast- Metro Diner (San Marco) or Cool Moose Cafe (Riverside)
Captain Z good call on the breakfast at Metro Diner but we never say Harpoon Louie's it is just Harp's. :D
I know Thai Garden looks like just a strip Mall hole from the outside but I really love it.
By the way, if you visit any of the restaurants and other places mentioned here or on other threads because you found them on Metrojacksonville.com, you might mention to that manager that you saw them listed here. Make sure, too, they know how to find us (http://www.metrojacksonville.com/ (http://www.metrojacksonville.com/)). We might get more input, if you'd like that, that way. Maybe we could make up some sort of card and put it on the site so we can copy it -- I'll leave that to those of you who know more about this sort of thing. Eventually we might want to carry advertising and it wouldn't hurt for businesses to know we're here.
Where is Thai Garden? The southside/baymeadows intersection has 3 or 4 that are pretty good (Lemongrass, Pattaya Thai, and 5th element (never been there, but looks busy)). Thanks for the heads up about Harp's, it's one of my favorites.
Thai Garden is in Orange Park on the right hand side of Blanding headed south just before the mall.

I tried Steak n Shake for the first time ever last night and I liked it too. Not a big fan of European Street Cafe. The Grape was fun but expensive for eating. Sumo Sushi - by far my favorite!!!!! I also went to Yummy Sushi and it was pretty good. Nice presentation. I want to try Seven Bridges and Fontana as well as the brunch at The Crabcake Factory. Oh and how could I forget The Fox is the best for breakfast!
~total foodie here
Mojo's BBQ - great food and great music

remember the drive in across from Bishop Kinney?
anyone remember a burger joint at Jacksonville Beach called the
Copper Stack? (or was it the Copper Kettle)
near the HoJo on Beach Blvd.
I grow old.....
Billy, If you remember the drive-in across from Bishop Kenny and Assumption you are indeed growing old! Cruising through with WAPE-AM blasting on the radio; round and round looking for friends and showing off, dressed in pink and black. yow!
Please, we're not talking Happy Days, more like Dazed and Confused era.......

Italian - Mezza Luna
Mexican - La Nopalera
Copious Amounts of Lightly Cooked Animal - Espeto
Date Night - BB's, The Brick, Bistro Aix
Valentine's Day - Melting Pot
After work - Mossfire Grill
I've also become a big fan of Johnny Angel's Diner on the corner of Beach and St. John's Bluff. Really good sandwiches, clean, and a real fun atmosphere. Bad location though, which I hope doesn't doom them.
MMMMMM! I almost forgot about the Mossfire Grill. YUMMMM!
Is the Goal Post still open in Avondale?
Also: Why are there so many hot dog carts in Jacksonville?

Also: Why are there so many hot dog carts in Jacksonville?
I was wondering the exact same thing today, as I drove by like 3 of them within 10 minutes. They are springing up everywhere, and none of them really appear to be that busy. There must be some hotdog-cart pyramid scheme running around here.
Nice little spot in Ponte Vedra called The Palm Valley Fish Camp..... Right next to Lulu's on Solano Rd west of A1A about a mile up on your right.
Speaking of hot dogs. The Hot Dog Shack down in Jax Beach is so good!

Einstein Brothers is pretty good.
Rosy's is excellent mexican. Get chicken nachos as appetizer and carne pibil for entree
copelands is pricey but lunch is exceptionally priced. Specialize in nawlins grub but everything is good. Even their ribs and wings.
Ribs BBQ sauce has apple in it. Scrumptious. Wings are excellent appetizer

Was he worse than he is now?? I want to kick him in the teeth every time i hear him come on the radio... Geeeeze.... and Im not generally a violent guy... heh.... but hey..... what can you say? lol
re: Greaseman..."when he was fresh" ?? LOL I'm an old geezerette, I remember him on the radio over 30 years ago. My mom thought he was hysterical, so when your parents think something is cool, that sort of kills it right there. I've seen the advertisements for him on tv recently -- I don't care to listen to him again. Meanwhile, back to the THREAD already in progress - Athens Cafe. omg...
Might I add that the uptown market in Springfield has AWESOME deli sammiches. There was this turkey sandwich with avocado in it that was orgasmicly good.
I haven't gotten to try as many different places since I'm an out-of-towner, but my favorites in no particular order are Clark's, Jenkins BBQ, Chart House, Metro Diner, and Basil Thai. I'm really looking forward to trying Uptown Market and Burrito Gallery, among others.
I don't think anyone has mentioned vegetarian options yet. Chamblin's Uptown makes a mean Veggie Wrap-fabulous! I'm expecting jokes from Ocklawaha or Steve Z to follow...

5 Guys (Regular sized cheeseburger) Burgers and Fries....when you want a good ol' hot, juicy cheeseburger, and fries cut from real Idaho "pertaters" *Slingblade's pronunciation* that sit in boxes stacked up in the joint - and you can eat peanuts roasted in the shell while you wait only a few minutes for your order.

Krystal is why I beg for In and Out to come to the East Coast... oi. Sonic > Krystal anyday!
Anyone in the Mandarin area should give this little hole-in-the-wall place a try. Sushi House, across the street from ACE by the Uhaul building, is a really great and they're very friendly. It's jsut a little family joint but they got out of their way to make sure you have a good meal.
Also, right beside it is Santioni's, the absolute best Italian place I've ever eaten at down here.
Krystal and In and Out are different beasts. Krystal sates a more bestial thirst. You go to a place like 5 Guys or I&O because you want a good burger. You go to Krystal because you absolutely have to. There's no debate, no discussion and no emotion. When it's Krystal Time, you put no more thought into devouring a sackful as a wolf would contemplate devouring sheep. Would one sell their soul and set this world ablaze for a mere burger? I think not. But god help you if you get between that steamed goodness and someone who needs it.
Now if you don't mind, I need my fix.

heh, that reminds me of a David Cross bit where he gets a bible verse with his sandwich while flying Alaska Airlines.
"Wait a minute.... I don't remember ordering the Christian sandwich. No...I didn't because if I had they definitely would've offered me the Buddhist pasta ...."
Ate at Fu Hao Bisto in 5 Points tonight; wonderful food absolutely incredible presentation. Carved vegetable flowers and vase surrounded by carved chain from carrot. This is the sort of place you would pay twice the price for in Atlanta, Washington or New York.
Highly recommended!

I never make it out to the beaches anymore but there used to be a place out there, I think it was called Cruisers, that had the best burger in Jacksonville.
Cruisers just opened a location for us townies, it's in the Lakewood plaza facing Hendricks, just north of University Blvd.
the old Atlanta Bread Company/ Jax Liquors?A&P space on the north end?
Exactly. Right where Atlanta Bread use to be.
My son waits tables there. The food is quite good!!!
In Lakewood, Pizza Italian's Lasagna is very good (the sauce, or "gravy" if you know some real New York Italians!) is to die for. Sorry to say the bread and salad were horrible, but go anyway, for the rest of the meal. Cute little family restaurant.
It's been a long time since the last time I visited Sarah Lee's Bakery. The taste of their bread is good and how they entertain their customers are charming. Breads are the safest foods to eat whenever I am traveling. If your stomach is not that keen to try local delicacies, I am sure there is something in their bakery that will satisfy your hunger. We went to The Black Bean in San Marco today. I had a veggie cuban that was one of the best meatless sandwiches I've had. The fries are good too.
Oh and I haven't actually eaten there yet (although the food looked great) - I sure could go for some Bold City Brewery right about now. Games and beer. Awesomeness.

There is a California Pizza Kitchen in the former Sharper Image Space across from Maggiano's Little Italy. At St. Johns Town Center
I'll have to check it out...
Oh and I forgot Mossfire and OBrothers...both great as well.
I heard that another Papa Murphy's is opening somewhere in Duval soon (I thought in the Tapestry Park area, but I may have that confused with the Jimmy John's that just opened there) - Also, here's the original article from a few months ago:

There is a Pap Murphy's in Orange Park off Blanding Blvd south of Kingsley Ave. It is next to the new Shoe Carnival. Haven't tried it yet, will post a review after we do ( I know just a little about the pizza biz ).
All that Papa Murphy's talk prompted me to pick up a pie tonight - the young ladies working indicated that there will soon be new locations on San Jose Blvd. & Fleming Island.....
