Southern barbecue and beer garden on Kings Avenue

NICE. I figured that as Hendricks and San Marco Ave have filled in more and more, Kings would come along next.
Yeah, you'd think Kings Avenue is ripe for this kind of stuff.
Nice. Within walking distance of Kings Avenue Station too! A potential lunch spot for a downtown worker!
Sweet. That little area at centered at Hendricks/Nira has sen some pretty decent action int he last couple of years with V Pizza, Sidecar, San Marco Station, and Aardwolf. This will be a good addition and keep expanding the area. I wish they would do somehting with King's though, it certainly doesn't need to be 4 lane.

I haven't been in the area for awhile, but has there been any movement at the San Marco Station commercial area since the Panera?
Very Cool! Now how buying out those skeevy bars next door and turning King street into more of restaurant row! 8)

Kings Avenue. Would love for it to be like King St.
Any word on the opening date?
Seriously! I hate when people ask about updates without posting anything substantive, but I can't wait until this place is open. I'm going to ride up here all the time for some delicious BBQ. Also, anything that expands the San Marco commercial footprint is a huge plus in my book.

Slow down...
The Cap was saying he normally doesn't like it, but is just as excited as you presumably are. He was excusing the non-information giving, annoyingly inquisitive, waste of time drivel that you call a post. ;)
Naldo: There are people on this site who are notorious bumpers of threads who get everyone excited by seeing that a topic they're interested in has new news, only to have their soul crushed when they realize it's just that guy bumping again. You're new to the site so you may not know that, but it draws the ire of other posters.
I've driven past this place on the way home from work a few times lately, but there hasn't been any visible changes that I have seen. Given that the outside area has a high privacy fence and the windows are super dark, it's very possible that the work is just shielded from view, but I'm betting that this will be a slow moving project.

Soul's being crushed? Ire? Maybe someone forgot their coffee this morning?
I live in San Marco and just wanted some information on a place that was supposed to open in September, at least according to the original newspaper article. I figured this was a community forum, apparently it's not.

Anyone feel sorry for the Baltimore guys? Waterways committee meeting two days out. Anyone going? I'm scared to death.

I was going to but I can't F.I.N.D. any info on it. Anyone want to do a RICO loop on our NATION AMERICAN HERITAGE ST JOHN'S RIVER? Baltimore, never forget.
But seriously.... where is the BBQ? I'd go there tonight if it was open.
Swung by today and talked to Michael, the co-owner. He said they expect to be up and running by December. It's under construction and looks like it's going to be a cool layout with indoor/outdoor seating options and a bar. He explained that he had done a BBQ place in Boston and they made legit beef brisket in the Texas tradition. That's great news for anyone that knows Texas brisket.
They are working on a website. I'll stop by in a month or so and provide another substantive post with the website address.
Solid update. Thanks for doing that.
Thanks for looking into it, I've been really curious. Not for your next mission, find out where all the USPS blue boxes in San Marco went. They pried them all up when they closed the Naldo Not-a-post-office.
^Yeah I went to mail something a few weeks ago and drove around the pharmacy on Atlantic a few times saying, man, I swear I've mailed stuff from right here before.
BBQ news -- I was walking by the other day and saw a dumpster outside, and some work going on in the interior, so it looks like the restaurant is moving along.
The Naldo Not-a-post-office was torn down, it's an emptyish lot now. The only place you can mail a letter in San Marco, other than your own mailbox, is a cluster mailbox off of Minerva I think. And it only takes small letters. Kind of bizarre not to have any blue boxes anywhere around here.

Isn't there a box behind the building at the Riverplace skyway station? Or did they remove that as well?
San Marco, no post office, grocery store or major Pharmacy.
How is this a desirable neighborhood?

I'm guessing you're comparing this to the "desirable neighborhood" of Riverside Avondale? The Avondale/Riverside neighborhood stretches 2.8 miles from The Fuller Warren to Fishweir Creek and 1.1 mile from the river to roosevelt/ I-10. Now that Brooklyn is on the up and up, you try to claim that too (but still shun Fairfax) which expands it to 3.5 miles. Switch sides of the river and that includes all of miramar and the north part of lakewood. The Winn-Dixie, Publix, Spring Park Post Office, CVS & Wal-Greens all fall right on the edge of those borders.
Riverside/Avondale has no post office, a micro-Publix, and a Wal-greens that ruins one of the most prominent intersections in the neighborhood, but according to you those are what make it a "desirable neighborhood".

The lack of a grocery store in San Marco does blow. We do have a pharmacy, Robert's Southbank Pharmacy on Atlantic. I've never even noticed that we don't have a post office, because we have a postman, and also because it's 2016.
^I've only driven by Robert's, but it looks to have all of the actual pharmacy products you'd need. Nowadays most of what the chain pharmacies sell aren't pharmacy products anyway and the Daily's will have a lot of that stuff when it opens.
The grocery store issue is tough, but it's not that bad for me to go to the Publix at Atlantic and University. The rest of my family lives near the duck pond and they use the publix at University & St Augustine.
I'm eagerly anticipating the new off ramp from I-95N at Atlantic. No more Emerson for me.

Agreed on all points Captain. You're speaking for a lot of folks. Having a legit entry point to I-95 and a 24-hour place to buy gas/beer/milk/snacks is huge for the area. Southern Kitchen is great for breakfast/lunch but this new place should give the area a solid BBQ option for dinner.
I posted to see what folks would say. There was no judgement in my post.
I live in San Marco, moved there after 9 years on Oak Street, and believe it is better than Riverside-Avondale.
Once the Publix opens on Atlantic (providing it does) that will be huge for the residents, but might snarl traffic in an already precarious spot.
Imagine a major pharmacy will be in the mix somewhere in that vicinity. I personally have never met anyone in San Marco who uses the
Roberts, but I'll ask my friends who have lived there several years to see what they use. Hendricks Ave Elementary and Landon Middle
School rare considered among the best in the city. Not sure what middle school serves Riverside-Avondale.
I do miss having a UPS store like the one in RA next to Starbucks.

Lacking anything else to do apparently, I took the dog for a walk that way last night... there is indeed a blue box at the back of the Riverplace South (Avmed) building.

That's interesting, since if you don't think San Marco is a "desirable neighborhood", and think Riverside-Avondale is even less desirable, I'm not sure what neighborhoods would be desirable. Certainly nothing remotely comparable to those.
Anyway, I use Roberts' as it's right around the corner for me. The one downside with it is the hours. But I do my scrips through the mail, and as Zissou says, you can get the non-pharmacy stuff elsewhere, so I don't have a huge need for a big box pharmacy. In fact I'd rather not have one if it's going to be like the suburban King Street Walgreens. Presumably the Publix will also have a pharmacy.
The lack of a grocery really blows and it's definitely the biggest thing missing here. But where I'm at there are 3 Publix's, 2 Winn-Dixies, and Fresh Market within a 10 minute drive. I find the neighborhood "desirable" despite this omission. I don't care about the traffic as I don't drive to the square now if I can avoid it, but that might change as I'm sure I'll drive to Publix at least some of the time.
The post office thing has never even occurred to me, but I suppose if you need one regularly that would be an issue. I've used the main office near Downtown and the one on Spring Park Road. There is a UPS store in Miramar that I've used.
The elementary and middle school district is a big draw and one of the things that distinguishes San Marco from Riverside. For me, it's also a measurably closer drive to work on the Southside. To me, downsides of living in San Marco are the lack of little things like barber shops (compared to expensive salons), independent coffee shops, and nightlife options (we have some of the best bars but it's not like Riverside or Avondale).

I didn't realize you moved. I thought you were speaking as an R-A resident.
There's a FedEx or UPS store in Miramar by the italian place and Players grille. Not sure what part of SM you're in, but it could be close for you.
I live right by Landon middle and have pretty much the same observations as Tacachale... the barber shop thing drives me nuts. I can't go 2 blocks without passing 3 or 4 $50 haircut salons but I have to drive to Cliff's at University/San Jose for a barber shop.
I go to the UPS store downtown if I can -- when I lived downtown I had a box there and like to give them the business, but I go to the one in Miramar sometimes too. There's also Fedex downtown which is open later than either if you need it.
Worth it though, I wouldn't live anywhere else around here... except on the river in SM, which isn't going to happen anytime soon.
edit: I will add, perhaps redundantly, that compared to the suburban neighborhoods I lived in growing up, being able to walk anywhere is fantastic.

Munsey's been around for years and I am familiar with him and his work. We used to hang out back in the day. Mike Schmidt is someone I have known for a looooooooong time and I wouldn't believe anything that comes out of that guy's mouth. If you actually looked into this BBQ place he "ran" in Boston, you'd know it went out of business in like less than a month due to jaw-dropping failures. Just because some guy says he is some "Texas brisket" (whatever in the fuck that is-- it certainly isn't just some vague expertise he claims for validity) expert, doesn't mean I automatically believe him.
So, yes, I do have "actual information". Sorry I am a realist and not some pie-in-the-sky guy who believes everything he is told. And, I realize no one could possibly know more about this project and its principals than some dude who spends all his time on an internet message board and some guy who walked by it, so take my opinion for whatever it's worth.
Thanks for backing up your statements, in a fashion. But that's really your problem. When you do bother to back up your shit talking, generally by saying you know the people involved (along with everyone else in town), you still remain comfortably anonymous. You've never said who you are or how you're such an authority on why other peoples' businesses suck. Whatever it is you do, you're not putting it out there on the forum where you spend every third post criticizing someone for something. I doubt you'd care for it very much, considering how defensive you get when people call you on an internet message board.

I prefer anonymity, same as you. Just because you don't know my name, it doesn't make my opinions less valid.
I was born into the Lucky Sperm Club and also grew up here so, yes, I do know quite a lot of folks that get discussed here. I'd prefer just give my opinion that looks like some asshole showing off his connections. I think that's better than everyone else here who pretends they know what is going on behind the scenes. Also, there's enough fart-sniffing echo-chamber rah-rah-rah around here that there's really no reason to chime in except when my opinion is contrary to what everyone else is saying.
I love BBQ. I hope this place is good and best of luck to Chad and Michael. However, I am realistic and don't expect much. Sorry that's apparently such a radical outlook.
Well, thanks for resisting the urge to work in the phrase "circle jerk", at least.
The thing is you don't come off as a guy that's just giving his opinion. You come off as a guy who thinks he has great authority to badmouth other people's businesses because he's so knowledgeable and well connected, but who won't back it up. In other words, you come off like everyone else who "pretends they know what is going on behind the scenes". And that's besides your... acerbic communication style. You do sound like a pretty smart and insightful person. But you also sound like a person who enjoys dumping on other people on the Internet. And I don't think you have so little self-awareness that this is news to you.

I've eaten at Franklin's in Austin and if someone mentions they are making something half as good as Franklin's it will blow any Jax brisket away. In general Florida BBQ consists of pork or chicken, the brisket here is horrible if you know great brisket. Conversely, our pork and chicken BBQ is top notch and Texas is just ok.
Before you talk about BBQ maybe you should do some traveling and eat BBQ from other places so you know what you are talking about instead of acting like someone who is having their period.

QuoteSan Marco's Bearded Pig plans March opening
Michael Schmidt grew up in Jacksonville's restaurant business – and soon, with the opening of Bearded Pig, he'll be making a comeback.
Schmidt and his business partner in Bearded Pig, Chad Munsey, plan to open the restaurant, which is located at 1224 Kings Ave. in the former Endo Exo, in March. The focus of the restaurant will be barbecue and traditional Southern fare, with a twist.
"We've taken what most people consider traditional and dialed it up," Munsey said.
The restaurant will be fast casual style and feature aspects of both central Texas and Carolina barbecue, but will use dry rubs for all its meat. Sauces will also be available for the meat, which will include brisket, pulled pork, spare ribs and sausage. In order to accommodate a wider audience, Bearded Pig will offer strictly vegetarian sides, including mac n' cheese, potato salad, baked beans, french fries and cole slaw.

Pretty much my experience this weekend as well. They did an amazing job with the space. Hopefully they have plans for some misting fans for the outside space for the summer months because it looks like the majority of their seating is in the outside patio. The food was good and well priced. Not the best bbq I have ever had but on par with Mojo's and 4 Rivers locally.
Went yesterday. Wasn't blown away but it was pretty good, they've been open for 5 days so I can't fault it too much. The space looks really nice. My biggest complaint was the sauces, they need some work for sure. Meat was pretty good, sides were OK. I think Mojos and 4 Rivers have the edge food wise, but this place is brand new so time will tell.
I went to the Bearded Pig after eating at another newer bbq joint a few miles away recently, that didn't even have a smoker/fire pit. So, the bar was set a little lower. (Electric cooker, really?) But I had the brisket and it was very tender, had a slight smoke flavor to it and I really dug on one of the sauces, it had a catchy, unique name but it escapes me at the moment. I believe it was the spicier one of the bunch. Some of the other sauces ones were probably not up to par for some but still above average.
Really though, if you're going to a bbq joint for the sauces and not the meat they're trying to make up for lack of flavor, IMO.
What was the name of the other newer bbq joint?
I went on Thursday and I thought it was pretty good. My biggest complaint were the sides. i got the baked beans and the mac n' cheese and it tasted like both had been made in the morning and sitting in a warmer all day. The ribs were great and the brisket was ok. They ran out of meat on Saturday and sunday, so I guess they're getting strong business.
