Does anyone have any confirmation that the USA will play Scotland in Jacksonville at EverBank Field on Saturday May 26th in a friendly? I heard some noise on Twitter over the weekend, but nothing since.
Now THAT would be sweet - It would be WAY sweet if they could tie into TPC weekend somehow considering that they appear to have a friendly with Brazil locked up @ FedEx field in late May already. Only a few blurbs, but I'll keep watching.

Yeah, I doubt they would be able to do it with TPC since that is in early May (around the 10th) and the Scotland game would have to be scheduled around the FIFA calendar.
I think the 26th through the 30th (or thereabouts) are FIFA friendly dates, so I could see the USA playing two games during that period. That would fit into the USA-Brazil at FedEx theory and still allow us to hold out hope for the USA game here.
Fingers are crossed...
The Brazil match in DC is set for May 30. The Scotland venue is suppposed to be announced within the next week.
I have a close friend at US Soccer House in Chicago, sent him a text this afternoon...... Jax is short listed.
I heard last night that it's a go. The date I heard was the 25th though.
According to this article on Yahoo:
Quote. It's also believed that the United States will host Scotland at the end of May, potentially less than a week before the match versus Brazil. Jacksonville and Boston are two rumored hosts for that particular match.

This would be really cool. I went to a game with South Korea here when I was a kid. It was pretty crazy.

Well, I believe the Jacksonville Jazz Festival is May 24th through the 27th, so it really will be a great weekend to showcase downtown to some visitors.

When was that? I don't remember that one. I bet that would have been a fun game to attend.
I know that we played Germany here - maybe around 1999? It was at the Jaguars stadium. I missed it because I was out of town. It was a double-header - the USA men and women played that day.
A long time ago I saw the US play someone (Moldova?) at Wolfson Park. They basically shoe-horned a soccer field in there.
Some friends and I went to see the USA - Panama Gold Cup game in Tampa last year. I think the crowd was around 27,000. And that was for a meaningful game. We should be able to top that.

I'm trying to find information about it. It was probably 1995 or 1996, at the stadium... It's possible I'm misremembering key information.
I have heard that the Scottish team is negotiating a week long hotel stay in Jax. Do not know if they are doing the same in other cities, but we are at least a possibility.

Same here. Checking Google News too. That's where I found the Yahoo story.
any one hear any more?
Nothing that I have seen or heard. I did find some soccer fansites from a few weeks ago saying the rumor is the game will be here. But nothing recent.
Sorry, but I don't have anything to add. I might spend some time tonight checking the Chicago and Boston blogs to see if they've got any news. I hope it's still going to be played here.
USMNT has the ability to call up any player, but they typically defer to European clubs (and player wishes) for long-distance travel for smaller friendlies. Premiership finishes the season about two weeks before the anticipated US friendly date, freeing Dempsey, Howard, and co. providing rest periods are waived. Bundesliga will be finished. Holden should be back from injury. In all, that gives us a decent shot at seeing the A squad if we land the match here in JAX (assuming Kinsmann doesn't save them for the Brazil friendly a few days later.)
I so want this match to happen here.
QuoteJacksonville to host USA soccer match
Jacksonville will host an international friendly soccer match the weekend of Memorial Day.
According to Shad Khan's spokesman, the United States men’s soccer team will play Scotland at EverBank Field on Saturday, May 26th.
This will be the first warm-up match for the United States before FIFA World Cup qualifying begins in June.
Khan's spokesman tells WOKV the U.S. will bring its “A†team of international stars to Jacksonville â€" goaltender Tim Howard, midfielder Landon Donovan, forward Clint Dempsey and more.

Friggin awesome. Hope we get to see our A team vs. Scotland's A team. Should be a close game, but a win for us. They are a mid tier European team.
Hotels and restaurants in Jax are going to make a lot of money that weekend with Jazz Fest and this. Quite a few people will travel from out of town for the game. Especially since its a 3 day weekend and Jazz Fest will also be going on.
When are the tickets on sale????

The U.S. national soccer team will face Scotland May 26 at Everbank Field, the first time since Feb. 6, 1999 that the team has played in Jacksonville and the first of three "friendly matches" in a eight-day span leading up to World Cup qualifying.
The match will be 8 p.m. and televised on NBC Sports Network. It will be the first broadcast by that network of a U.S. men's soccer match. Ticket information is not yet available.
The last time the U.S. team played in Jacksonville was an upset of then-defending European champion Germany, 3-0. The U.S. has played Scotland six times, with a record of 1-3-2. The U.S. has played Scotland on home soil twice, tying both times. The last meeting in the U.S. was a 0-0 decision in Washington D.C. in 1998.
“Jacksonville has an amazing facility and is the perfect place for us to begin our important summer schedule,†said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann in a statement. “We are excited to bring the U.S. National Team back to a part of the country we haven’t visited in many years. It’s fantastic that we can continue to give fans in different parts of the country the chance to share in the journey.â€
The game in Jacksonville comes at the end of a training camp for the U.S. team. On May 30, the U.S. will play Brazil in another friendly match at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., and on June 3 will play Canada in Toronto.
The U.S. will play Antigua and Barbuda June 8 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa in its first semifinal World Cup qualifying match. The U.S. will then travel to Guatemala to play another qualifier.
The U.S. has reached the last six World Cups. The World Cup will be 2014 in Brazil.
The match at Everbank Field has the support of Jaguars owner Shad Khan, who shares publicist Jim Woodcock with the U.S. Soccer Federation.
"Shad wants to do whatever he and the Jaguars can do in May to make sure U.S. Soccer will come back to Jacksonville in the future," Woodcock told the Times-Union.

Also, for those who are members of the US Soccer Supports Club, tickets go on pre-sale on Feb. 27 at 10am. A one-year membership is $55, but it might be a good idea for someone who wants to buy a lot of tickets together for you and family/friends. Make your friends chip in for the membership--you keep the team scarf. :)
I think it can take up to a week for US Soccer to process a new application and email your membership number to you for ticket purchase, so this may not be the best option for those who are not members yet. Still, you can read more about at http://www.ussoccer.com/Community/USSocccer-SC.aspx (http://www.ussoccer.com/Community/USSocccer-SC.aspx).
*Adding to Spouse's post: If you are already a supporter-member of a club team, you may want to check if they offer a discount on the USSSC membership.
American Outlaws also have JAX chapter and will be offering tickets in their seating bloc.
Sams Army will also have tickets in the same section as the Outllaws... Seats are are almost always behind goal www.sams-army.com
Tickets bought. See you all at the game!
Just bought almost a whole row!
Early tickets for Jags season ticket holders on sale now.
I feel like I bought a row, too, Bridges. :)
I'm also really happy to see people who don't usually get into soccer supporting the match here-- and to all of them, a huge and heartfelt THANK YOU! I have a friend who can't get over the concept of extra time who bought a deck of four seats. Really cool.
I friend of mine told me today that a Scottish contingent has already purchased ~2,000. I anticipate that there will be a good turnout based on the chatter that I've seen lately.
Just got my tickets as well, a block of 25. I really hope the stadium gets full.
Is there a special link/code for the VISA presale? When going to Ticketmaster, the quantity dropdown is locked in @ blank. Ah, you lucky Jags season ticket holders...

That's awesome. They will bring a lot of money to Jax and to our state. I'd imagine most of them plan to go to the game and then hit up Orlando and/or South Florida. Since the game won't sell out, a lot of Scots will probably decide to come last minute too.
blizz, my friend who actually ordered all the tickets said he called up us soccer group sales at 312 528 1290. Hope that helps.
Got my 8. Anyone have a prediction on attendance? I'm thinking ~29-35k. It doesn't appear that the upper decks are initially on sale either.
^My guess is more around 15-20k.
They're playing Italy now if anyone has some downtime...
I'm thinking up to 40,000 seems very attainable
I didn't realize that the average MLS stadium only holds~20,000. If you look at the league footprint now, the Southeast is COMPLETELY omitted.
I hear that there will be a monster truck show at halftime and that Daughtry will be signing the National Anthem in order to boost attendance.
Ohh and Clint Dempsey just scored to put the US up 1-0 over Italy at Italy. This is the worst Italy has been in a long time, but they are still an upper tier European team.
USA wins 1-0! First ever victory over Italy. Hope that's a sign of things to come...
I bought my tickets last week, but my neighbor tried last night and apparently everything in the middle of the stadium is sold out. His only options were behind the goal or in the corners. Seems that Jax might be a good city for the national team.
I know someone in Tallahassee who bought a block of 90 tickets
That's good news, Control. I played around on Ticketmaster and it seems like some of the price ranges are either sold out or only have scattered seats left.
Ticket sales seem to be good, especially considering that the local media hasn't really promoted the event too much. I think the TU ran an article when the game was announced, but hasn't run one since the ticket sales were announced (and now open).

I'm seriously impressed by the block ticket sales that this game has had. It shows that a lot of people in north Florida have been waiting for a game like this and want to share the experience with friends, teammates, etc.
I spoke to someone at the US Soccer Federation last week and they were at over 18k.
The post about ticketmaster availability got me curious, so I did a little window shopping this AM.
Of the 8 price points, from $22 - $299 listed here www.ussoccer.com/Schedule-Tickets/2012/~/media/4C743B038D884F26935570E0431F52F0.ashx (http://www.ussoccer.com/Schedule-Tickets/2012/~/media/4C743B038D884F26935570E0431F52F0.ashx) it appears 4 levels are sold out or only have single tickets left. Sold out are $299, $99, $68, $50 - available are $199, $40, $29, $22.
Read somewhere that Jax will become a regular venue if we get 25K at the stadium.

Saw an update from Visit Jacksonville last week that said just over 20,000 tickets had been purchased and that they are now projecting over 30,000 sold by game time. That is great, I went to a US Mens' National Team Gold Cup game in Tampa last year and they had an announced crowd of 25,000 - and that was against a Panamanian team with a lot of followers.
From ticket-master it looks like the top 5 price points are sold out, with only the $22, $29 and $40 seats left.

The city did a pretty poor job of putting too many events into one weekend. Memorial Day the downtown hotels fill up just from Jazzfest, then the city brought in the Jehovah's Witness Conference at the Arena for the same dates, I guess with the idea that it will help fill the outlying hotels? And now the soccer at the stadium. As someone who works in Jax tourism I hope all find good accommodations and have a great time.

Sorry, wasn't clear enough. It would be great if the city were able to attract events to the other 51 weekends a year. 4 major events on one weekend is great, but would be even better to spread them out a bit. I'd rather fill my hotel 4 times than once.

Amazing! I can't wait to see how many they finally end up selling. Can you imagine how great it would be if it was USA v Mexico or maybe against a top soccer nation?
I'd love to see Jax get a USL Pro or NASL team. I think it could really work.
http://www.actionnewsjax.com/content/topstories/story/USA-Scotland-breaks-attendance-record-for-soccer/6LIxwMpgs02TduMA1aoG4g.cspx
^I totally agree. Regular MNT hosting and pro soccer are one of my "attainable dreams" for the city's sports scene, up there with making UNF and JU sports a community draw, AAA baseball, and bringing back hockey.
In regards to the NASL, I wonder if already having two teams in Florida would help or hurt us.
Did the game back in 1999 or 2000 not draw 20k?

Hard to say, especially considering that the other two NASL teams don't do very well. USL Pro's Orlando team kicks their behinds in attendance, even though they're supposedly on a lower "tier" than the NASL. Hell, if the attendance figures for FC Jax Destroyers are correct, even they're already pretty comparable to the NASL teams - and those boys don't get paid.
I'd imagine our likeliest route would be USL Pro, considering we already have the USL PDL team that seems to be doing pretty well so far. I'd expect it would be even more likely if Orlando ends up getting the MLS franchise they're gunning for.

It drew about 17,000, according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_in_American_soccer").
The hardest part for me watching the new Rowdies down in Tampa is I remember the first ones. My grandfather used to have season tickets back in the day when they were drawing 20k+ at the old Tampa Stadium in the early 80's. That was in the old NASL. Definitely not the same.

I was a big Tea Men fan when I was in primary school. I remember when Dennis Witt and Ringo Cantillo came to my school (Merrill Road Elementary School) and talked to us about soccer. A few weeks later I saw Dennis Witt when I was coming out of Showbiz Pizza and I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought it was a big deal celebrity sighting!
The Tea Men were never really that great, but I loved going to the games. I was gutted when they finally folded (after that ridiculous season of 'indoor soccer' - what an abomination).
Keep in mind that we're at 20,000+ now; we're still almost 2 months out & they've yet to advertise much (if at all).

I like, though I think the diagonal stripe is a bit too much. But the hoops make a lot of sense.
I wish US Soccer would do something about its hideous logo.
Looks good to me. The 'bank is gonna be rocking that night.
Not a big soccer fan but if kilt soccer was coming to jax id show up and pay for a ticket.lol
I hope they don't change the logo.... I have had it tatooed on my leg for a long time!
I get a bit tired of the whole stars and stripes motif. I don't know why we wrap ourselves up in the flag so much (and that goes for more than just soccer). I think we need a re-brand.
That said, I do think the hooped shirts are an improvement and look better than a lot of other national teams' current shirts. Also, the actual style of the shirt is nice - no weird collar or gimmicky stitching/tailoring.
It looks like we ripped off Celtic and made the stripes red. I think its gayer than Wales.

The last Wales kits I saw looked okay. Most of the Umbro ones tend to be decent (though some of the recent England ones have been ugly - which is quite a feat for plain white shirts). Speaking of ugly - the British ones are hideous.
My frist reaction on the new kits: "So we're a sideways Sheffield or Stoke, now? Or worse, we're a red QPR."
Ugh. Hideous.

The USMNT would do well to be a red QPR!
I can think of few things more vile the combination of Reds and QPR*. ;) Of course, our memberships and (Mrs. JaxByDefault's incomprehensibly divided) loyalty lie elsewhere in Hammersmith & Fulham, so take that with a grain of salt.
And Danno, I think the additional contrast stripes and darker color make the FC Dallas kit easier on the eyes.
*Fine: Mr. JBD has an occasional affection for LFC and we're sometimes amused by Joey Barton's twitter. That's as much credit as they're getting.
I've got nothing against QPR. I'd be happy if they managed to avoid relegation, though (assuming they don't do so by beating Spurs this weekend).
Speaking of Hammersmith and Fulham, I was happy to see Chelsea beat Barcelona last night. I can't think of the last time that I actually wanted Chelsea to win a match.
It was absolutely nerve-wrecking to watch, but I'm thrilled with the Chelsea win yesterday. Not sure 1-0 is going to be enough heading to Camp Nou, but a better position than giving up away goals. Wish I were at the Bridge--or even just anywhere in the Blue end of SW6 after the match, save Fulham Broadway station. I'd have to hide from my fellow Fulham members, most of whom were probably decked in Barca gear, to be sure, but anything north of Parsons Green should have been safe.
I feel as though I say something nice about Spurs in return, but with the league table so tight right now, I'd be more honest in just admitting that I spend a lot of my spare time hoping for Tottenham and Newcastle losses. ;)
Seeing Barca play at Camp Nou last November was spectacular, but we had a deal: I'd spring for tickets, don a supporter scarf, and cheer for Barca for one night (against Zaragoza), but in return they had to lose if they faced Chelsea in CL. Good to see them keeping to their side of my delusional bargain.
IN USMNT news: it looks like Stu Holden is back training with Bolton, but with no word on a return this season. That means he likely won't be match fit for the game in JAX either, which is a shame.
Finally, having a somewhat active thread of soccer fans here makes me spill tears of joy onto my keyboard.

I take it they're selling a decent amount of tickets to the USA - Scotland match so far, huh? I really wish I was going to be in Jax for that. It could be a lot of fun. I think the USA should be able to win it pretty easily, but with friendlies, you never really know, I suppose. Still, it's great to see US Soccer thought of Jax when scheduling matches. And if it sells well, who knows?
I was hoping the USA would get the nod for the 2022 world cup. Any idea if they're going to bid for another one? I think by 2022, soccer will be way more popular than it is now. And it's probably doing the best it's ever done.
I'm with you on hoping Newcastle loses. It would be pretty great to see them in Europe next year, but I hope it's going to be in the Europa League. I obviously want Spurs to qualify for the CL, though more so they run less risk of losing a few key players (and maybe stand a chance at picking up a few decent new ones too). The stress of watching the matches lately has been terrible. They don't have any tough matches left yet I could still see them not winning any of them.
I have to believe that the USMNT will have most of their starters out there against Scotland due to the fact that they start World Cup qualifying two weeks later. I could be wrong though.

Yes, Fulham's last match is against the might Tottenham Hotspur on May 13th. It might be cutting it a bit close, but he could possibly make it.
I hope they televise the match on ESPN or FOX.
The game is on NBC Sports Network (old Versus) NBC now shares the rights to the games with ESPN, Fox is out of the USMNT business for now.
Unless a player is involved with the English playoffs (Championship, League One, League Two) they should be there.

Dempsey will be available; the question is whether we are going to put our first team on the field for a friendly in JAX when there is a higher profile friendly against Brazil and a qualifier in the subsequent two weeks. We haven't had too many games with our best from the Premiership (Dempsey, Holden, Howard, etc.) so the friendlies may be a good time for team development with all of USMNT's best available players on the field.
I hoof a well-worn path of thousands of miles a year to the Cottage to watch Mr. Dempsey play; the least he could do is return the favor and show up here. ;)
What's the point of all the friendlies? Are they warming up for 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers (or have those already taken place)?
^It's the CONCACAF qualifiers for the World Cup; Round 3 starts in June.
Really? Wow, that's early!
Not really early, Europs starts qualifying in Sept., South America has already started, Africa starts in June, etc.
Yeah, I know, but UEFA quals start after Euro 2012. I guess there's not a huge difference between June and September, but it just seems really soon. Especially as the CONCACAF Gold Cup will take place after the World Cup qualifiers start.
To be honest, I don't really follow the USA (as they don't televise the matches over here). I was a bit surprised to see the USA didn't manage to qualify for the Olympics.
yeeeessh, Please don't bring up the Olympics disaster. I was looking forward to figuring out who the next generation of USA players would be.

Yes, I believe the Cup is in 2013. Which, come to think of it, wouldn't allow enough time to hold qualifiers after the end of the cup and the beginning of the world cup.

If that's true, we now probably have even less of a chance of seeing our best starting XI given the close proximity to the DC game.
I hope not - I love the prospect of a Saturday night game under the lights...
I'm actually ok with that since Monday is a holiday.
Well, Saturday night in Jacksonville is technically Sunday morning in the UK. 8)

I haven't heard about any potential move either. I would also be surprised at this point.

I don't think 30,000+ is out of the question. Those kinds of numbers would guarantee future games here in Jacksonville.

Read somewhere this week that Klinsman would announce the roster for the 3 friendlies and first 2 WC qualifiers on the 25th. Although he'll obviously have to announce who is coming to camp before that. Klinsman is not going to screw around with World Cup qualifying, this will be the 'A' team, with a few younger faces mixed in.

From the Washington Post - you won't have to wait too long, Klinsmann will announce the foreign based camp roster tomorrow, MLS players on Sunday
"Juergen Klinsmann will introduce the U.S. training camp roster in two stages: foreign-based players May 15, MLS players May 20. He will set a 23-man list on May 25, the day before the Scotland friendly in Jacksonville. The Americans will also face Brazil, Canada on June 3 in Toronto, Antigua in a World Cup qualifier June 8 in Tampa, and Guatemala in a qualifier June 12 in Guatemala City." http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/soccer-insider/post/brazil-announces-roster-for-friendly-vs-us-national-soccer-team-may-30-at-fedex-field/2012/05/11/gIQAUdjwIU_blog.html
In August a youth soccer tournament may be coming to Jacksonville - over 100 out of town teams would be here. IF, that is, our fields are in good enough condition. That is a big IF. Presently, the City, which is supposed to maintain the fields, does a less than acceptable job of it. (I'm sure this is another problem due to our supposed lack of money. I say "supposed" because I recently heard a statistic that our millage rate is the lowest in the state for counties of a certain size.)
It the forum on a contribution from Farah & Farah, a quoted letter from Mayor Brown also mentions a large commitment from Terrell - Hogan toward youth activities. Perhaps that money can be used to get our local soccer fields up to snuff, assure the tournament comes here and not to St. Johns County, and brings with it the revenue from all the hotels rooms and meals that the players and their families would consume.
From today's WashPo, an update on ticket sales. I think somewhere between 30 and 35 thousand is going to be about right.

Ticket sales update for U.S. national soccer team matches
By Steven Goff
Here are the latest numbers for five U.S. national team home matches.....
MEN
Scotland friendly May 26 in Jacksonville: 28,000
Brazil friendly May 30 in Landover, Md.: 46,000*
Antigua World Cup qualifier June 8 in Tampa: 6,750
If you are talking about the Jacksonville Fury tournament, some of those games are probably going to wind up in St. Johns County regardless.
The qualifier in Tampa has really only sold 6750 tickets?
The asterisk next to the ticket sales in DC is because they sold 7k premium seats on Living Social for a steep discount. Those tickets are not included in the figure.

I have noticed that the Tampa area is not what it used in regards to sports. The support down there has not been what is used to be. Heck they dont even support the Rays or the Bucs, let alone supporting any other type of sporting even. And this is a small event. I wonder whats going on down there. I know someone is going to lash out and say Im wrong, but this is what I have observed.

I went last June for a Gold Cup group stage double header, the game the US Men lost to Panama. There were maybe 20,000 people there, maybe 1/2 rooting for Panama. I'm surprised they've sold so few, but I guess Antigua isn't much of a draw. Tickets are more expensive than they are here as well.
Sasha has indicated on his twitter feed that he will not be included in the US team this summer.
The Washington Post is saying that we've sold 28k tickets so far.
Yeah, I heard that about Sasha. Any details? Not sure what that guy has to do to get a call-up from Jurgen. He's been playing a lot (and very well) for Anderlecht according to all the reports, and they just won the Belgian league.
I wonder if Clint is going to make it to the Scotland game - he didn't play this past weekend because of a groin strain or something.

US will announce who is being called up from International leagues this afternoon. MLS on Sunday.
Anyone know if I can buy parking passes before the day of the event?
Wanted to host an IAW tailgate but need to know where we will be setting up first.
Scotland is not bringing Charlie Adam, Darren Fletcher, James Morrison, and Alan Hutton who are a few of their better players. Adam and Fletcher are hurt, but not sure about the others.
On paper that is a team we should have no trouble beating at home.

Hope he calls up Jozy, I was under the impression that the remaining call ups would be for MLS based players (Brek Shea, Landon and a few more) but the article leaves open the possibility of more Foreign based players being called. Jozy offers a physical presence and holding ability this teams needs sometimes. Played really well against Italy.
I'm excited about Torres being back. Great looking midfielder last time I saw him play.
no Chandler

I think he wants to see if he can make the German team before he gets cap-tied to the US. Part of me wants Klinsmann to tell him to F off, but he is soooo good.
Unlikely that Chandler will ever get that call up, but fullback is the weakest position for Germany right now, so you never know.
And I agree Control about Jozy. He's had a good season and needs to be a part of the team. His holdup play is needed if Dempsey is going to play a CAM/2nd striker type position.

Paco Torres looks like the most creative center mid we have now. I think Bradley didn't like him because he played a little too far back, but I really want to see what Klinsmann can do with him.

Wonder if they'll have a "Daily Deal/Groupon" like D.C. did too. I'm reforecasting my projection @ 34k.
I hope not. I think those Groupon/Living Social deals on events end up pissing off the people that paid full price in the beginning.
Chandler has played in friendlies, new FIFA rules state he isn't tied until he plays in an official FIFA match like the WC qualifiers or the Gold Cup that he opted out of. Jermaine Jones has 3 caps for Germany and then switched to the US.
Just picked up 4 for the match. Can't wait!!

I stand corrected.

Klinsmann when announcing the players called to camp
“I have had long conversations with Timmy about where he is in his professional career and his commitment to playing international football. He has expressed his appreciation for all the opportunities we have given him, but he also feels at this point he needs to take a break. It’s disappointing not having him as a part of the team at this important juncture of building our team, but ultimately a player must decide what is best for him. The door is certainly not closed on Timmy, but in the moment we move on without him.â€

Scotland is not bringing Charlie Adam, Darren Fletcher, James Morrison, and Alan Hutton who are a few of their better players. Adam and Fletcher are hurt, but not sure about the others.
On paper that is a team we should have no trouble beating at home.
Don't forget our best striker is also missing; Steven Fletcher.
I see comments like this all the time on Scottish websites and I'm not really sure that anyone can say how this next Scotland team will perform against USA. Does anyone really know both teams well enough? Do the managers even know? It's fun to speculate though I suppose. I hope your team comes a creditable second.... ;)
So what's the deal with parking? Can we buy into lots in advance? I'll have about 4 or 5 cars.
Also, any idea on what time we could start tailgating?

I've never tailgated before. Will there be barbecued food or is it too risky with all the petrol around? Is there a shop nearby where I can buy some beer? I've never been to Jacksonville before but am looking forward to arriving in a couple of days. Maybe see some of you around.

I can only speak about the Jaguars football games but at those games grills are allowed. I usually bring a camping grill with a small propane tank but there are people with full size grills and propane as well as charcoal grills. I would assume that lots would open a minimum of 4 hours before the match like they are for Jags games. They might be open earlier than that though.

In my experience Scotland fans normally get to the pub at about 8am on match day (and the day before that.....and the day bef......). Florida being a holiday destination (and also 5 hours behind) I expect some will try to get to the bar earlier. Will there be beer served in the stadium (like at the baseball (very civilised :) ))?
^Presumably there will be beer sales at the stadium, and there's a pub right across the street and many more further up in the core of downtown. Keep in mind that that weekend will be a Jazz Festival, so the whole area will be pretty packed.

The only time I've ever been to the stadium where they haven't served beer was for a Georgia-Florida college football game. I can pretty much guarantee you they will be serving it for this. However, since this is an 8pm kick-off, they may stop serving at halftime. I don't know that though.

YUP.
I'm sure there will be plenty of lots open to park in- just like there are for Jags games.
Great information, thanks. I expect I will be familiar with the place after spending a week in the Landing.
Any news on ticket sales? Do you know how many have been sold?
Difficult to say how many Scotland fans will turn up because it is a holiday resort (for us anyway (and the weather here is sh*t)). I know of people that are coming down from Canada and from other parts of the US. How many are travelling from Scotland without SFA tickets I don't know. I think we had maybe 500 in Japan (including expats) for Kirin Cup (roughly 350 travelled from Scotland). Not sure how many we had last time in Yokohama (must have been drunk). My guess would be 500-1000 Scotland fans. Will we all fit into Jacksonville Landing? Apparently the company that make Grouse whisky are organising a party in Fionn MacCools (at the Landing). Can't see us being loyal to any particular bar though.....other than the one with the nice girls....which might be them all....... I do expect a good sing song before the game (starting from the morning) in the Landing on the day of the game.
Hope you all enjoy the atmosphere that we may bring. (rest assured that there will not be any violence (I have never seen any at a Scotland game (except when we play england)) there will be a few drunks but I expect they will be friendly ones).
JPJ - last update was 28,000 tickets sold, most are thinking they'll be in the neighborhood of 35,000 at the game. A great turnout for a friendly match.
The Landing is used to handling huge crowds, there are lots of open spaces between the bars and along the riverfront, it will accommodate the Kilted Krew well. During the evenings of the Florida/Georgia football weekend the landing handles 10,000 + !
Enjoy your time in Jax, it is a very friendly and laid back city.

No, I was referring to the lots closest to the stadium. I figure the usual lots will be open. Jags games designate lots that you have to be assigned to (A-KK). I would pay for several spots if I can get right by the stadium in C, D, J, M, or N (I park in E for Jags games).
Garage parking is not well suited for open grills.
Trying to get a group of 5 cars together, I'd like to have it planned out.

You might try calling down to the stadium to see if you can pay in advance and reserve spots together. If not you might just have to go early to ensure getting them together. I park in the Tailgaters parking lot for Jags games in order to get a designated spot. You might try calling them also to see if you could reserve a few spots together. They're pretty helpful about that sort of thing.
Just called the stadium. You can buy parking passes for the lots. They are $20 a piece and you can get them at the Arena monday-friday 10am-4pm. However, they'll be open all day tomorrow because of the Sharks game.

@ Intuition - Any chance that you guys will brew some (80 shilling) Scottish style ale in honor of the game?

I'll be cheering loudly for the USA, but I wouldn't mind imbibing something akin to the Edinburgh-ubiquitous Caledonian 80/* all weekend.
*Yes, fellow beer snobs, I know Caley isn't the world's best 80; just an example.
Looks like no Jozy, according to the roster update today he won't be joining the team until the 28th. Surprised Brek wasn't called up, he seemed a favorite of Juergen's.
I think Brek Shea could still make it down the road. I'll preface this by saying I'm a huge fan of his, however, he really lacks consistency and polish. He's got the size and athleticism to be a great one, but I constantly saw passes that didn't hit the mark and questionable hustle. Here's to hoping he tightens his game up before the world cup.

Take that (rest of) Florida! There's a new Sheriff in town! Tampa is still sitting on 8k for a QUALIFIER. In fairness, Scotland is a nice match up. Tartan Army starting to arrive. I have been in contact with some of this group and what started out as trying to get some of their business I have actually discovered a great group of people and have made some new friends. A nicer group you will not meet.
I just saw that they also do a donation to a charity in each city where they play a match. They have selected the School for Autism in Jacksonville for this match.
Anyway, in addition to the 500 or so coming from Scotland there will be about 3000 others coming in for this match.
I would encourage everyone to take the time to 'chat them up' as they are easy to talk to and very friendly. Just look for the kilts! And of course, they do like to drink! ;)

USA Scotland to Break All-Time Attendance Record for U.S. MNT International Friendly in the State of Florida
May 21, 2012
32,000 Tickets Already Sold for May 26 Match at EverBank Field;
Free Public Training to be Held at Stadium on Friday, May 25
CHICAGO (May 21, 2012) â€" With nearly 32,000 tickets already sold, the match against Scotland on May 26 at EverBank Field in Jacksonville will set the attendance record for a U.S. Men’s National Team international friendly in the state of Florida.
Tickets starting at $22 are still on sale at ussoccer.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 and at all Ticketmaster ticket centers throughout the Jacksonville area (including many Walmart stores). Groups of 20 or more can obtain an order form at ussoccer.com or call 312-528-1290.
U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has named 27 players into camp which is taking place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The team will train in Orlando until May 25, when Klinsmann will select a final 23-man roster for the match against Scotland.
The group then departs for Jacksonville and the match on May 26 against Scotland which kicks off at 8 p.m. ET. Prior to matchday, the team will host a free public training session May 25 at EverBank Field.
The previous record was set on March 25, 2007, when 31,547 witnessed the U.S. MNT defeat Ecuador 3-1 behind a hat trick from Landon Donovan at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.
The USA’s game in Jacksonville will be its first in the city in more than a decade, with the last match representing one of the biggest upsets in U.S. history. On Feb. 6, 1999, the MNT defeated defending European Champion Germany 3-0 in front of 17,259 fans, the previous attendance record for a U.S. match in Jacksonville.
The U.S. holds an all-time 1-3-2 record against Scotland and last played the team to a 1-1 tie in Glasgow on Nov. 12, 2005. The Jacksonville game will be the first meeting on American soil between the sides since May 30, 1998, when the teams tied 0-0 in Washington, D.C.

Yes, I like the squad as well - especially some of the newer faces.
I'm interested to see how Cameron looks - he's been great for Houston. I'm also interested in seeing what Morales can do. He's not cap-tied yet, I think he can play for Germany and possibly one other team. Castillo has looked like garbage every time he's played for the US - I wonder if the only reason he's here is because Chandler decided not to come.
I would like to see a little bit of Joe Corona and I've always liked Paco Torres - I hope he gets a shot to play against Scotland. I wonder if Zusi gets some playing time since he's sort of a local guy - I think he's from Orlando.
I really liked the way Terrence Boyd played in the Olympic qualifiers - the guy has heart. I would love to see him make the senior squad with Dortmund. I think he's very sincere in his desire to play for the US, even though I would have said the same thing about Chandler last year.
I'm most excited to see how Jacksonville looks. 32,000 tickets already - I'm blown away. I was hoping we could top 20 or 25k, now 35k or more looks realistic. We probably could have pulled more fans from Orlando if they didn't have a PDL game Saturday night - I'm sure some of their supporters' groups would have come and made their case for an MLS team.
I knew there were soccer fans here, but I thought most of them were my friends and people I play soccer with. I didn't realize there were so many others!

Yeah, I went to Tampa for the USA-Panama Gold Cup game, and they only had about 25k for that. Hopefully this bumps us ahead of them in the rotation.
Good post Ajax. I follow the Bundesliga a bit and Boyd is likely going to move this summer. Just too much talent at Dortmund. He's actually not even the best forward prospect on their B team. He wants a move to a lower table BL or 2 BL team.
Ticket sales are unreal. Hopefully this will get us put into the regular rotation for national team games.
While the Jazz Festival & Sharks game are nice compliments - I wonder how many more tickets could/would have sold if this were a stand-alone event.
I don't believe Altidore is reporting to camp until after the Jacksonville match.

There is going to be some serious tailgating before the game. I know of quite a few different groups planning to tailgate all day. And many of them aren't even soccer fans. Going to be a crazy weekend with Jazz Fest also going on.

Yeah, I heard Boyd might be leaving. As long as he's getting playing time, I'm okay with it. But I like Dortmund and it would be great to have an American playing there. Maybe one day. Too bad Subotic didn't stick with the US!
downtown is already starting to fill up with soccer/football fans....Landing restaurants were apparently much more crowded last night than regular Mondays.
traffic should be interesting on Saturday. Wonder if I should come via the Hart.
I have never been to a soccer match (beyond the high school level) but I may make a last minute decision to attend. If so I am biking it from Riverside.
Couple questions though. Has anyone biked to a stadium event? If so where did you lock up and were you able to bring in a bag with bike tools, spare pump, tube, etc?
I've ridden my bike and locked it up to one of the lampposts in front of the stadium. I rode a beach cruiser and didn't bother with any spare tools or anything like that. I did leave a insulated bag strapped to my bike with a couple of beers in it- I was shocked they were still there after the game.
I was going to bring a cooler for beer to tail gate. I just figured after drinking the beer I would use the cooler to bring my spares and tools into the stadium so I wouldn't have to leave my cooler behind.
you can also chain your bike to the fence next to the stadium, that's what I do.
QuoteCouple questions though. Has anyone biked to a stadium event? If so where did you lock up and were you able to bring in a bag with bike tools, spare pump, tube, etc?
I occasionally bike to Jags games Lucas, and will probably do the same for the soccer game. You just lock up your bike on the fence that surrounds the stadium.
I've never brought a bag of tools in, can't help you there. I carry one of these:

If you want to do a bike caravan to the Intuition tailgate, let me know! I've already attached my US flag to the bike in preparation of the event.
I may just strap on the styrofoam cooler and leave the tools at home.

I will let you know when I buy my tickets. If you end up riding your bike I will throw a flag on mine and caravan it up there.
lucas...as others have said, you can lock your bike up on lamp posts or the fence....or GUESS WHAT....there are actually bike racks outside the north end zone!

I'll be cheering loudly for the USA, but I wouldn't mind imbibing something akin to the Edinburgh-ubiquitous Caledonian 80/* all weekend.
*Yes, fellow beer snobs, I know Caley isn't the world's best 80; just an example.
There are people from this brewery coming over. One plays the pipes in brewery pipe band. Ask for Craig with the pipes and the wee beard. Aka shakey.
Caledonian is a solid brewery
I just read on a TripAdvisor forum for Jacksonville travel that 45,000 tickets have been sold. Can anyone confirm this?
Also, according to the number of people posting on the TripAdvisor forum, it looks like there will be a good amount of Scots. Cool!
^ seriously doubt it has jumped 12,000+ in the last 2 days....but yes, there are expected to be about 3,000 Scots (and fans) in attendance...many are already here
Hooligans!
I'm sure a lot are already here. They need at least 3 days of drinking before a game! ;D
Anybody know will the Parking garage be open on gameday??

Probably, but there is a Jehovah's Witness convention at the Arena, so it might be full pretty quick.
Any ticket news update?

They've been here for quite a few days. Met some really cool Scotts last night at Intuition, and the Landing has been buzzing all week.
You aren't lying, their drinking has been very impressive.
^No kidding! Met two different guys in kilts at Chomp Chomp last night. This is going to be a great time.
Don't even like soccer, but I damn sure ain't letting those Scotts outdrink us in Lot J on Duval's hometurf. #forAmerica

In a word, DAAAAYUM.
A person I know in the event department for Everbank Stadium said they are preparing for 40K with last minute sales and walk ups.
I hope the weather holds up though. I am planning on biking up there Saturday afternoon and buying tickets at walk up.

$40k sounds right with the pace of sales. I'm with you on the weather, let's hope it holds off til Sunday!
^ actually I'm hoping it hold off late Sunday....so Jazz Fest is a complete success!
Most of The Tartan Army have arrived as of today. If you want to meet and talk with them just walk up and introduce yourself. They are a very friendly group.
For those that don't much venture outside of Riverside/Avondale I would suggest you try a visit Downtown tonight, tomorrow and Sunday. Between the soccer match and Jazz Fest there is a lot of activity (for a change) Downtown.
Soak it in, enjoy.
I raise a glass to the Tartan Army! ;D
I'll be getting a picture with the tartan army if I can. Anyone know if there is any place nearby where I can park and avoid the $20 fee? Looks like one might be able to park on Marsh for free if there are spaces.
you can park on any street in the downtown area....try parking near Liberty and walk to the stadium

I thought they disallowed some street parking when there are events at the stadium. Hence why I was asking. Thanks!
I believe they do cover some meters during events and do not allow parking but I think there are plenty of on-street spots where you are able to.
Looks like if you park between Bay and the River on Liberty it is an easy 2 mile walk to the stadium. Can't wait. Looking at the expected lineup for Scottland, we should get 2-3 goals past them.
Just got back from Everbank Field (holy Watchtower there's a bunch of Jehovah's Witnesses' there). All the meters behind Maxwell House and all near the stadium have been bagged.
If you're going for the thing at 5 pm, it didnt appear that they will be charging for parking, half the stadium lot and all the lots next to Met Park are all full of people at the convention at the Arena.

Dear Ticket Buyer,
On behalf of the players and staff, we want to thank you for choosing to be a part of what will be a record-setting crowd for the game against Scotland on May 26 at EverBank Field. The only people more excited than you for the match are the players on the U.S. National Team!
We have been working hard at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando to get the team physically and mentally prepared for what lies ahead for the next few weeks. By creating a performance driven environment through technical work, fitness training, nutrition planning and other specialized areas, we are providing the players all the tools necessary to be successful. They have been working extremely hard, and we feel good about the 23 players we have chosen to compete in the next five matches.
We have told the players that we are treating this series of games like it's a "five-game tournament." It is one of two opportunities we will have before 2014 to be together for this long a period of time, and we have carefully planned the schedule for training, travel and games to look like it could be a World Cup. This also means that we plan on using the best lineups we can for each and every game, so you can look forward to seeing a very strong U.S. team against Scotland.
On Saturday, we play a difficult opponent in Scotland. Having won the last four matches, including the big victory against Italy in February, we enter with a lot of confidence. At the same time, we need to be fully prepared for the challenge. Scotland is going to come out and give their absolute best, and we must be ready to do the same. With such a huge crowd behind us, the motivation to perform will be even greater.
This is the USA's first game in Jacksonville since 1999, and the support from the city and all the fans so far has been absolutely amazing. We know it's only going to get better Saturday night! We intend to match your enthusiasm by demonstrating a proactive style of soccer that displays energy, intensity and commitment. We hope you enjoy the game.
Thanks again for your support.

Your lineup looks good to me. I really don't want to see Castillo or Wondo start - they have both looked terrible for the USMNT. Nothing personal against them - I would be fine seeing them get a chance in any other game, but we're already missing out on Clint and Jozy...
If we could see Torres and Herculez start, and maybe Boyd come on in the 2nd half, I would be stoked!
I wonder if Edu might get a start since he's probably familiar with a lot of the Scotland players. I don't like him better than Jones or Bradley, though.
Grant Wahl (@GrantWahl) just sent out a tweet: "Based on what Klinsmann has said this week, I suspect Fabian Johnson will play left back ahead of Edgar Castillo."
As a die-hard soccer fan, I want to say THANK YOU to all of the non-soccer fans (soccer-curious?) who are going to the game and making this a big event. Hopefully some of you will leave the game as converts.
If you don't really follow the game, and you're there because you like gatherings or events, walk around during the game. The Scotland supporters section is either 127 (northeast corner - lower level) or 231 (2nd level by the west club). They brought a lot of fans so they could have 2 supporter sections. Walk by and listen to them sing and chant. The American Outlaws are the US supporters group, and they usually sit behind one of the goals - I think they're behind the north goal around Section 123. You can't miss them because they have flags, banners and generally stand and sing through the whole game.

Don't worry. There will be some Scottish supporters with flags and incoherent songs in section 123 !
I am one of those "soccer fans" during the World Cup and will watch a Premier League match when I come across it, but I am going to this match for the experience. After convincing myself that the Jax game was enough I'm now reconsidering making the drive down to Tampa for the Antigua game, provided, of course, that Clint is back in the lineup.
What I'm finding crazy is, alot of the Scots are saying how beautiful and clean Jacksonville is. We also received the same comments from Ohio visitor's during the gator Bowl weekend. Could it be that we are harder on our self's than outsiders? Its refreshing to hear visitor's say positive things about the city. Perhaps all of our money that we've pumped into beautifying downtown and the urban core has not been a waste after all. Anyways, I will try my hardest to be at the game, and I dont even like soccer ;D

I find, as a general rule, the British love Florida. They love the sunshine and the hot weather. So this doesn't surprise me at all. It seems like every Brit I speak to asks me why I left Florida to move to London. It just doesn't make sense to them!
QuoteWhen the United States Soccer Federation named Jacksonville as a host site in February for a pre-World Cup qualifying friendly against Scotland, it had no idea that fans would turn out in record numbers.
But with 37,500 tickets already sold, and a walk-up crowd expected to push Saturday night's attendance at EverBank Field to over 40,000, American star player Landon Donovan takes it as a sign that his sport might finally be gaining a foothold in this country.
Even the U.S. Soccer officials acknowledge that the anticipated big audience is much higher than initial projections of 20,000-25,000.
"It speaks a lot for the popularity of soccer," Donovan said after Friday night's one-hour practice at EverBank. "When we come to places we don't usually come to, it's always interesting to see the turnout. I think we're all pleasantly surprised here.
"I know you have probably a decent amount of people coming from other parts of Florida, perhaps Atlanta in Georgia. But it's impressive. I think we're all surprised to hear a number like 40,000, but we love it. It absolutely speaks to what's happening [with soccer in the U.S.]."
The U.S.-Scotland friendly should easily surpass the state-record crowd of 31,547 that showed up in 2007 for a 3-1 American victory over Ecuador in a friendly at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. Donovan scored a hat trick in that win.
"I remember a time not too long ago, maybe 10 years ago, where we were happy if we got 10,000, or 12,000 or 15,000," said Donovan. "So times have certainly changed."

what is an average attendance number for a MLS game???
MLS league average is a little under 18k. There are no teams in the southeast though. So we're at a geographic disadvantage. I also think its bigger on the West Coast because more East Coast soccer fans watch the European leagues.
Great showing tonight by Jax and the USMNT. Was a great atmosphere. I was sitting right next to the Scottish section and they were surprisingly quiet. Even before the game got out of hand. Good people though.
Damn that was fun. My daughter and I got to see the team come out of the hotel, got pins from the Tartan army, and saw the US score five. Nice night

Some guy was handing out fliers outside of the stadium pushing for the MLS in Orlando. I was like, "dude, look around at what's happening right here".....
What a great game.
Great game, great crowd. Scattered but few hooligan events.
Over 44k for any US hosted soccer game, let alone a friendly is really pretty good.
I liked the demographics at the game, lots of kids, lots of parents.
The only snafu was the scoreboard operator to start the second half.
The funny part was that the sodas were sold in Gator Bowl cups from 2 years ago!!
With Donovan used to playing in front of 18k fans and then rolls in for 44k, I can see why he might get "up" for the game.
Overall, a victory for USA, but a big win for Jacksonville.
I took my family to the game and we had a blast. We sat right behind the goal on the north side (where all the action was in 2nd half). I liked the international flavor of the crowd. Much more interestinging to me than the typical NFL crowd. Is there any chance that we could get an MLS team? I grew up going to NASL games in Ft Lauderdale - great memories!
From ESPN:
"Before a crowd of 44,438 -- the largest to see the national team in Florida -- the Americans wore new home jerseys with red-and-white horizontal stripes and silver numbers that were hard to read from a distance. Names were restored to players' jerseys for the first time since Klinsmann took over."
I am happy that jax supported this event and hope to have other international soccer matches here in the future.
A lot of soccer newbies around me, I'm happy it had a lot of scoring for them, would have been a total drag to get all these non-soccer fans out there and have it end nil-nil.
Stayed at the same hotel as the US team, which was fun to send them off and welcome them back, my kids got a kick out of that. Perfect weather, huge crowd, 5 goals! What a great night for Jacksonville.
I will say the stadium makes it very difficult to get into your section if its in the touchdown club, or whatever they call it. From the concourse was a very long line which an attendant told me was for an elevator to go up. She directed us to take the tunnel to section 240, and then cut over from there, which was so crowded and piled up with people that I mentally figured out where I'd put my six year old if it got dangerous. When we did go where directed we somehow ended up on the wrong side of a barrier, and when I climbed over it I brought the wrath of about 5 staffers - who probably would have been better suited to helping people get to their section than watching for people doing it wrong. The whole thing upset my daughter a lot. These are the sections that always look empty on TV during Jags games, so I guess they aren't used to having a lot of people there.
enough ranting, great night, great game.
What a great time. As some who was expecting a solid 18 thousand fans, this was a very exiting turn of events.

I think the showing last night makes us much more likely to get in the regular rotation for National Team games than to get an MLS franchise. If we do get in the rotation for USMNT's games (likely) and continue to show out, MLS will take notice. But it would also probably take MLS deciding to expand their footprint into the Southeast. Which would mean Atlanta, Charlotte, and South Florida teams as well.
There's no way to put an exact number on it, but I would estimate about 15-25% of the non-Scots were from outside the Jax Metro Area. I know people that came from Tampa, Tally, and Gville, and met some people from Atlanta. If we can get 30k+ for a lesser matchup than Scotland (i.e less out of town support), we may be able to sustain an MLS franchise.

I had friends from Boston, Dallas, Salt Lake, Nashville and LA there. MLS is out of the question for a long while. We would need a smaller facility to make it work as well. Orlando City FC does really well for an A League team. They would get a team well ahead of us.
I think it's pretty interesting how many people think 'we should get a team' now. Something tells me we wouldn't have hit 10k if, instead of Scotland, it was Antigua we were playing. I share the excitement, but common guys, it was one game. I think the realistic goal would be to work for games here every year. Let's get the population excited, see how many people go three, four, five years out, THEN see if we 'deserve' a team.

What a great game.

Is there any chance that we could get an MLS team? I grew up going to NASL games in Ft Lauderdale - great memories!
I think Ft. Lauderdale actually had an MLS team early...they played at Lockhart Stadium, a real dump....maybe because of that, attendance wasn't good.
I think the heat and humidity in Florida makes soccer in the summer a bit tough.

Eh. Some have pie in the sky dreams of a soccer team in Jax. Others have pie in the sky dreams of streetcars in Jax Bottom-line we are all probably just dreaming.

Streetcars in Jax are not pie in the sky at all. You can't even begin to compare the two.

Right! If we can get that faith and deternination back we had back then, we will accomplish anything we want. Weve became so discouraged over the years and thats not good. Im glad to know WE broke the attendance record.
This showing was as good evidence as any of the pent-up demand for soccer in Jax and our enthusiasm as a great sports town. It's a definite call for more regular scheduling of MNT games here. I expect that it'll also result in more serious looks from the pros. MLS is several steps away, but with this showing there's no doubt the lower level professional leagues would find success here, and support there will be a strong indicator of how the local culture would support an MLS team.
The return of the Tea Men? Yes please! (The name is negotiable).
I'd rather be in the national team rotation than have a MLS team.
Agree.
The Tea Men didn't do bad their first year in town, drawing more then many other teams. The following year, the team suffered from a weak league and Tuesday games which pretty much killed the franchise. I did get to see Pele play when the New York Cosmo's came to town. Sorry that the team and then the league folded. It would appear that we have come a long, long, way since those days.
Attendance: ..............total.........average
Jacksonville Tea Men 152,111 9,507
California Surf 132,777 8,299
Toronto Blizzard 116,590 7,287
Atlanta Chiefs 99,022 6,189
Los Angeles Aztecs 93,031 5,814
Dallas Tornado 74,716 4,670

Not likely (at least if the Cosmos were playing the Tea Men) - Pele played for the Cosmos in the 70s.
I loved going to see the Tea Men, but there wasn't much in the way of atmosphere. I think the MLS seems like a vast improvement over the old NASL.
If given the choice, I'd much rather have a (well-supported) MLS franchise over getting regular USMNT games. Sure, you'd get to see players you never would see otherwise, but international football isn't all that great. Club football is much more fun to watch. Plus, with the USA being in CONCACAF, almost all competitive matches you would get to attend would be against lame teams (with the exception of Mexico).
The MLS seems to take a back seat because of the 2nd rate stigma globally. They need to continue to shed that perception in both officiating & players alike as Americans expect to pay to see the best of the best.
Our more successful sports seem somewhat proprietary. While not always the most popular globally, the most successful leagues in the United States boast the best of the best regardless (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL). We'll have a cup of coffee with cricket or rugby, but there's not much of a foothold there either. Case in point with motorsports in comparing the NASCAR circuit vs. the international flair of open wheel racing/Formula 1.

I have real issues with the MLS, not least of all is the fact that it is franchise-based and has no relegation. That said, I still like it. And the quality has been improving drastically. Sure, it may be the league where old European players go to die, but a few of the marquee names (Henry, Beckham... even Keane) are still in decent form.
That said, MLS soccer is not as much of a 'special' event as international soccer. Jax would probably do better hosting the occasional international match, where lots of people can make the trip in and it's more of a one-off than a regular commitment.
A lot of the reason why 40k+ tix were sold for the Scotland match was b/c of people travelling to Jax from all over to watch the match. You probably wouldn't get as much of that for the MLS. I think a minor-league soccer team might be a good thing for the city, though.
On a separate note, I watched the match on ESPN and enjoyed it thoroughly. But the pipers sounded way out of tune when they played Flower of Scotland and the woman who sang the Star Spangled Banner was terrible! Did it sound that bad live?

They should've just followed normal football protocol and played they music without the words (thereby allowing the supporters to provide the vocals).
It was nice to see so many people there for the match - though if you watched it on ESPN, there weren't any shots of Jacksonville :(
The team's new kits are excellent, though. I hope they stick with that general design for awhile. Simple and classic.

It most certainly was here in the UK.
My first soccer game I've ever attended, it was surprisingly easy to follow. Seriously a great weekend, spent most of my time downtown(handing out flyers for the food truck rally at Burrito Gallery Saturday June 9th) talking with Scots and the smattering of track athletes floating around.. Was a great weekend.

It would have been preferable.
The violations of football protocol (or at least the UK/Western Europe version of it) are legion at US games. Music is played in the stadium so loudly it drowns out chanting; the PA system is --to put it mildly-- overused; people in the stands around me (club seats, USSSC section, mind you) tried to keep a ball that had gone into the stands and then booed the security person that asked for it back; I couldn't get my stand to do any cheer but "USA, USA" and someone behind me referred to our effort to get "You're not singing anymore" going in the stand after the second goal as "mean" (it's probably the tamest taunt in all of football); club jerseys were everywhere, and US fans are getting a lot better but still don't have sit-stand protocol down pat yet. I usually prefer seats where I can follow the game better, but I'm considering moving to the American Outlaws section for US home games in the future.
That said, it was a fun night and I hope that we land more games here in JAX. The member of my crew who dressed as Where's Waldo must have had his photo taken with umpteen Scotland and US supporters, and we had good time buying a few rounds for and talking soccer with Tartan Army visitors around town.
As for hopes of a growing support for soccer in the US, I was especially heartened to see how many people came out to see the open practice on Friday.

I'm surprised, they already showed League One football earlier that day.
They were originally in the Boston area and were owned by Lipton; they were called the New England Tea Men. When Lipton moved them to Jacksonville they kept the name, and it just sort of stuck.
They were actually more successful here than the numbers indicate. Lipton had lost a ton of money on them in Massachusetts and wasn't willing to give them more than a season in Jax when it was clear they weren't going to recoup. A local group bought them for a second but they just didn't have the resources to make a successful run in the NASL. The team actually hung around in lower leagues for two more years after that.
Should note they won the ASL championship the year after the NASL folded. They actually had a very talented team that year, had some great young american talent.
Why wouldn't they allow in the noisemakers (vuvuzelas)? Isn't that a part of the experience?
Whoever made that decision: Epic Fail

Vuvuzelas are South African, what do they have to do with US or Scotland?
Useless stats:
While Scotland is a nice draw & brings the fans, the last time Scotland played in the United States was in May of 1998 - Washington D.C. (World Cup tune up/Friendly.
They were 23rd in the FIFA Rankings
<40,000 in attendance
I think that matchup is key; I'd love to see the USMNT v. Bosnia-Herzegovina scheduled in JAX given the influence in town.

I respectfully disagree - I hate those vuvuzelas. They made all of the 2010 World Cup games in South Africa sound like a swarm of angry bees was buzzing around. From what I remember during those games, I don't think the vuvuzela is African anyway. I would much rather hear the singing and chanting that you hear in the European games or the drums that you hear in the South and Central American games. There would have been much more of that (especially from the Scotland fans) if their team had put up more of a fight. :)
If I'd been sitting in front of a 10-year old kid blowing one of those horns in my ear for 90 minutes, I probably would have gone to jail.
Besides, I'd bet if someone tried to carry one of those things into an Old Firm match in Glasgow, they would have it shoved into an extremely uncomfortable place. And I don't mean the back of a Volkswagen. ;) (Apologies to any Kevin Smith fans out there.)

I was a little disappointed at that opening shot with Modis (or actually it just had "odis"), but the rest of the video they showed looked pretty nice. NBC Sports actually anchored their MLS coverage from the stadium during their Houston-LA Galaxy earlier in the day, and every time they would come back from commercial they would have some live shot showing the river or the Dames Point Bridge or some other photogenic area.

Haha - classic! You must have been with the American Outlaws. That was a very nice showing by AO - I could hear you loud and clear from Section 206. I went to the tailgate at Russ Doe's and got nice video of them marching to the stadium. They really do a great job adding atmosphere to the games.

As far as MLS is concerned, they definitely want to be in the southeast. Maybe after they get over their infatuation with having a 2nd team in NYC.
I would say that the first city in the south that comes up with a realistic plan for a soccer-specific venue, and a legitimate owner with deep pockets will get the team. Orlando is ahead of us now, but if some guy with a lot of money and maybe a really cool moustache wants a team here, MLS would listen.
Of course, there are more people like that in Orlando, Miami and Atlanta, but it just takes the right guy. (I'm looking at you Shahid Khan).
How cool would it be to have an 18,000 seat stadium in Brooklyn with the skyline in the background, served by streetcars with a nice warehouse district in the area serving food and beer to the fans...don't wake me up from this dream...

Khan doesn't
have to do it - I should have put a smiling winking face with my comment. :) I would be eternally grateful if Khan or any other deep-pocketed owner would entrust our fair city with an MLS franchise and help finance a stadium in an area that would produce some spinoff development.
Maybe Wayne Weaver is feeling the competitive juices flowing and would like to get back into the ownership game. ;)
Just to give everyone an idea of what costs would be associated with a new MLS Stadium. Here is Houston's new one. Just opened this month at the cost of $95 million. However, part of that cost is purchase of land and infrastructure improvements. Actual construction costs were about $60 million.

It may very well be a South African invention, but it's certainly not a traditional soccer noisemaker. I just wikipedia'd it and the origins are inconclusive, but I can say that I've seen plenty of Ajax Cape Town games online and never heard that annoying buzzing sound until 2009 or so.

A lot of clubs banned them after the 2010 World Cup - I know they were banned at White Hart Lane. That said, I think the novelty wore off really quickly anyway and I've not seen or heard one since then. I'm sure they're still going strong in South Africa, though. I guess I can appreciate the disgust - no one likes to lose that bad. But it
was a friendly and Scotland really are a pretty crap team. Even given the relatively poor current ranking of the US, they're still a pretty decent side. I just don't think a lot of traditional 'footballing' nations really rate the US all that highly.
Again, it was a friendly and it was against weak opposition, but I thought the US looked way better than they did in the 2010 world cup. They seem to have sorted out their back four (more or less). Maybe it's all down to Klinsmann.
True test tomorrow night vs. Brazil. Hope they can keep the momentum. They did beat Italy a couple of months ago so anything's possible...

Some were sunburned and that was the hottest day of the year so far (92 deg).
And they were def hungover!
But I think their teams play was the main reason.
They did not expect to win as well.
They were disgusted to lose to us 'Yanks", that I know.
They are a prideful group who live and die by their team. They travel the world to support them. That made an impression.

I did get to see Pele play when the New York Cosmo's came to town.
Not likely (at least if the Cosmos were playing the Tea Men) - Pele played for the Cosmos in the 70s.
Oh yes, it did happen. Not being much of a Futball fan, I have no idea how, when, or why, but he came down with their team and played a little bit. At about that same time he would play for both teams, first one, then the other, as his (former?) team moved about the country. I don't recall if he played for the Tea Men that night, but it seems like he was only on the field for a very short time. It was probably some sort of marketing tool, but for the first time, it got me excited about the sport. Perhaps one of us can dig up an article.

They talk a bluster in support of their team, but the Aberdeen and Rangers fans (though oddly both from Edinburgh) we drank with before the game both thought that the US was going to win, but predicted 2-0 and 3-1.
Part of the fun of chanting is that the home fans are doing the same. When all we can muster is the occasional "USA, USA" and our stadium culture isn't exactly friendly to the more colorful language of some of the songs (both guys said that they liked to use "Your home support is shite" or "You can't sing" (to "USA,USA") to rib US supporters), it takes away half of the fun.
Tartan Army is also famous for endless rounds of "Do Re Mi" --though I've no idea why -- but I don't think they ever got it going here. Two goals down in 12' pretty much made sure that they weren't singing anymore. (They briefly lit up when they pulled one back). Outnumbered usually doesn't slow them down a bit.
Like everyone else on this board, I have high regard for the Scotland fans that made it here to JAX. They travel; they dress, they bring their banners, they're usually pretty noisy, and they're generally affable supporters (even immediately after a 5-1 thwacking).
Speaking of thwackings: Let's just move on after that Brazil match...

We had a couple of people ejected from our section for setting off smoke bombs (happens every match), how they can prove it I dont know. Security also came and confiscated our inflateable sheep.
Haha - classic! You must have been with the American Outlaws. That was a very nice showing by AO - I could hear you loud and clear from Section 206. I went to the tailgate at Russ Doe's and got nice video of them marching to the stadium. They really do a great job adding atmosphere to the games.
Actually it was a joint supporters section.... A lot of us old school guys from the mid 90's Sams Army were there as well.
Looks like Fulham have filed a formal complaint against Liverpool for their pursuit of USA's finest, Clint Dempsey:

I'm sure nothing will come of this, as complaints of this sort are usually just bargaining tools - Dempsey will probably end up in Liverpool anyway, but Fulham will get some sort of concession.
It would be great to see him stay at Fulham and to see Liverpool actually face some sort of sanction, though.
He seems to have burnt the bridges at Fulham sadly. Don't know why he wants to go to Liverpool, he'll just end up back in the Europa League which he's already played in.

I don't quite see the attraction. The money, maybe? I suppose it's possible Liverpool may finish in the top 4 this season, but I'd be surprised if they did.
I could appreciate it if maybe one of the "bigger clubs" came after him - and even though Liverpool are still considered a big club, I don't think they will be achieving at that level before Clint has to retire. He's a good player, but not really good enough to play for one of the top 4 at this point.
If he were smart, he'd stay at Fulham for a couple more years and see what happens. Then he can look forward to a few seasons in MLS.
I like Dempsey and I think he fits in well at Fulham. I'd hate to see him make a stupid move (a la Robbie Keane) and piss away his final years in the Premier League.
My sources (and by "sources" I mean Eurosport/Yahoo) are reporting that Dempsey may have just signed with Spurs.
As a Spurs supporter, I'm very pleased with that, assuming the price was right. I would've preferred Moutinho, but there still just under 2 hours to go...
He did indeed and best of luck to him.
As a Fulham fan, I'm trying not to let the past few weeks of sitting out and turning his back on the side that brought him to the Premiership negatively affect my admiration. It won't affect my cheering on the Cottagers in the Haynes stand, but it does raise the question of whose name to get on a new FFC kit.
...and now, on to the taunting: "Clint Dempsey announced today he no longer wanted to play Championship football by signing with Spurs." ;)
Nope, too soon. Still hurts.
Well, to be fair, at least with Spurs he gets a chance to potentially play in the Europa League (which is more than he would've gotten this year at Fulham) ;D
I really don't know why he chose Spurs, to be honest - I think it came down to the window was about to shut, Fulham had rejected Liverpool's offer and he panicked b/c he had pretty much told Fulham to f*ck off. So he made the short trip across town (or to Essex, as it were).
Two Fulham players in the transfer window was a pretty good score for Spurs. But you guys got Berbatov and Huddlestone (apparently) - so not too bad overall, I don't think.
While Fulham have made great gains with Petric, Berbatov, and few others, I'm pretty gutted to see Dembele and Demps go. I was assuaged a little earlier in the summer when it looked like Dembele was headed up the road to that other SW6 club that I'll be decent enough not mention by name to a Tottenham supporter -- but alas.
I'm not terribly impressed with getting an injured Huddleston. Should I be? (No, really. I'd love to know if I'm underestimating him.)
Deuce played a Europa final with Fulham, so I'm not sure a run there with Spurs will impress him unless they win the cup. He does have a theoretically better chance of Champions League play trading his White for Lily White, but AVB at the helm with an odd assortment of new players is quite the wild card.
While it's a good pick up for you all, Dempsey is only there because LFC made an incredibly poor decision not to pony up a decent amount of cash. He was left with offers from Villa and Sunderland which were unattractive for both the player and the club (he so rudely slagged off); Spurs bid was basically his savior. Fulham made some cash before he went free next year and Jol didn't have to work to restore him in the side. Win for Spurs, Win for Deuce, Draw for FFC, and Loss for FFC supporters.
Yeah, the Europa League's basically a joke - I don't imagine Spurs will make it much of a priority of it this year. Last year they pretty much just played their kids and concentrated on the league. And still only managed a fourth place finish at the end of the day.
As far as Huddlestone goes - he should be healthy now. But he hasn't played forever, so it's hard to see how well he's going to play. When he was on form, he was quite a good player for Spurs. He works well as a holding midfielder but has a really powerful right foot - his passing (and shooting, strangely) is often compared to that of a quarterback in the NFL. I'm sad to see him go and happy that it's only a loan!
In other US team news, I saw Carlos Bocanegra left Rangers for Racing (on a loan deal, I believe). Good for him and good for the USA. I'd think the Segunda Division has to be a better class of competition than the Scottish Third Division!
The Bocanegra move is good, especially if he can get an extension next year seeing as how Racing Santander is usually a La Liga Primera side and should move back up. I think all of the US players made it out of the Rangers implosion, didn't they?

Yes, I think so, thank god.
FWIW, looks like Spurs kept Huddlestone. And he got a red card a few minutes ago in the Norwich match. Three matches in and the season is already turning into a joke.
