Oh its a bowling alley in the mall? Cool like PottersHouse mall.
no....it is in the old Toys R Us store...which is across from the mall!
since apparently you chose not to read the JBJ article, try looking at their website
Can't you look at the website for us?
I'm sorry I provided links. Next time I will embed a video presentation and tutorial. LOL.

Me too. My parents live right there so I've driven by often. Now I have somewhere nearby to hang whenever I need to house sit.
Have you ever been to the Istanbul Grill? Curious how that place is...

Bizjournal links dont work on my phone man, they made some stupid changes to their site & now I can not read any of the mobile articles they used to have. Sux they made changes when the original site was JUST FINE!
Damn shame we couldn't have stashed this place on Bay Street DOWNTOWN...
But of course if it flys darling... DUPLICATE IT WHERE LIFE IS MORE FUN!

Got ya. I think it's supposed to be a multi-purpose entertainment venue. Restaurants, bars, nightclub, bowling alley, stage for live performances, pool hall...fun for all ages basically. Unfortunately it is on the southside, but perhaps 10 years from now it'll be perfectly situated across from the "Avenues" commuter rail station on our SE rail corridor.

Isn't it similar to a project that was proposed at the old Hayden Burns Library?
I wish Bay Street Station was still in the plans. But the recession killed ALL of our downtown plans. Man if the recession wouldnt have hit we'd really be booming right now. (sigh) oh well :-\

Agreed also. I HATE their new site. It is so annoying. I am about to get a degree in web design and I am taking notes on what NOT to do. I can say this, metrojacksonville is very user friendly.

It’s actually pretty good. Surprising considering its layout is basically Waffle House with Mid Eastern flair wallpapered over the whole place. They even kept the checkered sign. But yeah, their food is actually really good and their Hookahs are honestly a lot better than Casbah’s. That might just be because they’re still new and not coated with resin on the inside.

I used to read bizjournals everyday both Atlanta Business Chronicle & Jacksonville Business Journal, then all of a sudden error error error. Ive even sent them emails saying my phone wont open the URLs...smh! You think most people who read bizjournals are on the go. And why tote around a notebook when my smartphone does many of the same things. So they lost a regular reader by making the changes. As for the bowling alley at Toys R Us. I guess it sounds cool.
perhaps they actually want you to pay for the paper?

Latitude 30 opens on Southside
01/06/2011
by Joe Wilhelm Jr.
Staff Writer
One of Jacksonville’s newest entertainment businesses is considered “one large restaurant with entertainment options†by its creators.
The one constant at Latitude 30, a new 50,000-square-foot entertainment complex on Philips Highway across from The Avenues Mall, is that food service is available just about anywhere. Food is available at the Sunset 30 Tavern & Grill inside the center or outside on the adjoining patio.
There’s also food in the Skybox Sports Theater; the AXIS Bar; the CineGrille, a 90-seat movie theater; Latitude LIVE, a “Vegas-style showroomâ€; and The Lanes at Latitude 30, a 20-lane bowling facility equipped with plush leather couches.
“We developed this concept for a small ski town in Colorado, (called) Winter Park,†said Jacksonville native Damon Brush, founding partner of Latitude 30.
“We found that it fit in that setting and I saw there was nothing like this in my hometown, so we looked into bringing the concept to Jacksonville.â€
The project cost $11 million.
A site at the St. Johns Town Center was considered, but the former Toys R Us store on Philips Highway offered a building, parking and access that suited the needs of the project.
“We are centrally located, so we can attract people from Clay, Duval and St. Johns counties,†said Brush.
The entertainment venue is promoted among several age groups, featuring 90 high-definition televisions, bowling, interactive video and prize games, billiards and movies.
The bowling facility is the first Brunswick Bowling and Billiards rep Eric Lindfors remembers being built in Jacksonville in the past 40 years.
The pin setters can be programmed to allow bowlers to practice knocking down specific combinations of pins, like the bedpost or 7-10 split. Also, each of the lanes is equipped with bumpers for younger bowlers. They can be deployed and retracted at the press of a button.
Another feature is the ticketless arcade. Some arcade games dispense tickets that customers can collect to redeem for prizes at the end of their stay. The machines at Latitude 30 record those credits on a game card, which eliminates the strands of tickets that can be accumulated in a night and also reduces expense of supplying the tickets.
The employees managing and staffing the complex are provided by Trifecta Management Group, which was hired by Brush and co-developer Brent Brown to manage the day-to-day operation of the complex.
General Manager Adam Kleinhenz oversees a staff of about 110 employees, including 14 salaried managers. He expects the staff to expand to about 130 within the month.
“We want to provide a fun experience for every age group. Adults can have just as much fun in the arcade as the kids can,†said Kleinhenz.
Latitude 30 is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m.-midnight Sunday-Wednesday; 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Thursday-Friday; and 10 a.m.-2 a.m. Saturday.

Saw that. I can't believe we haven't had a new bowling facility built in the last 40 years! If downtown picks up, maybe a small but upscale bowling spot like Ten Pin or Lucky Strikes could go in the Landing or nearby.
So it's basically Dave & Buster's with bowling added on?
I am pretty sure Dave & Buster's doesn't have a movie theater either.
or a live theater (for comedy shows and such) for that matter

Point. I kind of missed that part since they seem to be pressing the games so much.
11 million on a new concept. I wish them all the luck in the world!
well based on this weekend (where people had mto wait 3+ hours for a lane) sounds like they'll do ok
I went to Latitudes last Friday. It was packed. The restaurant was nice and casual... we didn't eat there but I looked over the menu and the pricing seems reasonable with sandwiches and entrees from $7 - $12. The drinks were a pleasant surprise. I had an old fashioned and a mojito - both were tasty and affordable at $6. The bartender took her time muddling cherries for my drink and seemed generally concerned about if I liked it or not.
The cinema looked to me like anything you might find in a big sports bar with a bunch of giant screens on top of screens on top of other screens. I'm not sure if it's solely for sports or if they show movies etc.
The bowling alley was by far the main attraction. The leather couches and coffee tables gave it a real loungy type living room feel. They did a great job on set up at the lanes. All the bowlers looked very comfy and it nice to have your drink with unlike regular bowling alleys.
The arcade, live music and DJ were lack luster imo - The band was a talented 4 piece with an acoustic guitar player / singer front man... but their entire set was bastardized pop cover song medleys that all sounded the same from start to finish. The DJ picked up in between sets blasting popular hip-hop and dance music and uncomfortably loud levels. To me it kind of ruins the lounge vibe.
All in all it seems like a nice new addition to the southside. I'll go again for some bowling, cocktails and appetizers with friends for sure.

the space you are referring to is the area next to the restaurant that has tables in a stadium box level configuration.
the actual cinema is in a separate area....to the back right of the complex
I also went, but found it a place searching for an identity. It was more like a Chuck-E-Cheese for psudo-adults then anything else, though it did have a great mix of 1950's bowling alley, with a 1980's arcade tossed in for good measure. Can't judge the food or drink really, because in that respect a nice Ruby Tuesdays or Longhorn's can supply the same with a beefier menu.
Really don't know what I was expecting, something more along the lines of a Playboy club sans bunny's or a cool lounge with many diversions. What I saw was more like Wal-Mart with neon then a micro-Magic Kingdom for grown ups and their kids.

I was told by someone at the bar that the area next to the restaurant was the cinema. What your saying makes much more sense though... and I just confirmed it on their website. I guess that part isn't open yet.
Our family chose to celebrate March birthdays by going to Latitude 30. Out of a party of 12 no one was satisfied with their meal. The place is very pricey and I think we would have enjoyed Mcdonalds better than this place. The food was very bland, no seasoning and was not hot when we received it. Great ambiance but overall ALL 12 of us give this place 24 thumbs down :-[. Save your time and money and go to Saint Johns Town Center, The Landing and even the Beach and choose a better place to dine.
My wife and I saw a comedy show at Latitude 30. We ordered some food in the comedy room and it was very good. I really like this place. At first glance, it reminds you of Dave and Busters, but there are a ton of differences. D&B has more games by far, but Latitude has a different feel and more to do, such as the Bowling, bar/club, restauarant and Sports lounge. I do like the concept. Once the movie theatre opens, it should be very nice. Parking is a huge issue though. The neighboring businesses will report you if you use their lot because Latitude 30 is full. Be careful.
I went a few weeks ago. We sat a a bar top table near the bowling lanes. Josh Scoobe was there and bowling right behind us. At one point he had a 7-10 split and rolled it right down the middle. I suppose it's impossible for him to do anything other than split the uprights :D

I have a friend who is a server at Dave & Busters, his name is Dave... If you want to make his day, after he introduces himself, ask him "Where is Buster?"
Drives him batty.

They told me they are leasing parking spaces from Wal Mart and The Avenues. I assume if you use valet parking, they may take your car there.
I thought it was OK. I'm not into noisy places full of sensory overload like that much, but if you like them, this is a good one.

I know one of the managers at D&B, with as busy as he is I have no reason to believe he would even have time to come here and post something like that! Believe me, they aren't exactly hurtin' for business.
I have eaten at Lat 30 three times, hung out at the bar, have seen a comedy show, been to a Seminole party and tried the bowling it is a good time. I really think if you go to one of the shows and then do one of the other activities it is a good time.
Me and my friend went there tonight. Say what you want, but the food was excellent. My friend got the roasted half chicken and I got the pork chops. It well exceeded my expectations. The only complaint I have is that there are no drink specials. The waitress stated that has been a big complaint, so this month they had a drink of the month menu, and the drinks on the menu were 6.00.
Wow - I'd say that they're doing well - adding a parking garage on Philips.
Latitude 30 gets $25 million for expansion into other cities

Thank God. The parking is terriable.
Yeah, the parking is awful but it's a great spot. We had a corporate outing there last fall and they went all out for us. And the food has been very good everytime I have been.
parking is only bad there on Friday and Saturday nights....and I was just there this past Sat. night and found parking without too much difficulty.
now imagine what would happen if we had a real transit system and our urban form was designed right....who cares that this thing isn't downtown....its across the street from a major regional shopping mall and adjacent to tracks (read commuter rail).....and with proper urban design, walkability in this area wouldn't be "out of the question"
bottom line....building a garage is a sad sad commentary on our collective priorities!

Who said anything about trolleys? That whole area would be prime for TOD that could benefit greatly from a SE commuter rail line.
There is free valet so I would say it is the easiest parking in town.

There is the mindset that got Jacksonville to where we are today!!
If you ran light rail from downtown all the way to say 210, you would stimulate TOD (Transit Oriented Development)
which increases density and in turn the tax base. Also how much would traffic improve in that area if everyone didn't have to drive to get there.
With bus service that is complementary to the LRT you could reduce the commute in one of the busiest areas of town.
Now this is just my humble opinion, but I am there are other posters here who agree with my thoughts and probably can add more technical opinion and data to support it.

which increases density and in turn the tax base.
Great. How much would that cost?

How much would it cost to widen Phillips Ave 2 more lanes?

Why would you do that when 95 runs parallel to it?

You might want to utilize the search feature on this website. Commuter rail has been discussed many times.
Why would I want to do that? I am asking about widening Phillips not commuter rail.
When we did the mobility plan project estimates in 2010, widening Philips to 6 lanes between University and I-95 (near Avenues Mall) came in a little over $54 million. That stretch is 6.68 miles in length.

I'm sure you have the numbers. What would be a theoretical cost of an LRT starter line in the existing ROW along the same corridor?

because both roads will be over capacity soon enough...so what mobility improvement(s) should we do...widen I-95, widen US 1, implement BRT, or build commuter rail?
as for NRW's question about light rail on US 1 from University to I-95....light rail costs nationally are running $25-$50 million per mile...so even at the low end, we're talking about more than $160 million

Or turn Southside Blvd into a freeway!

So we save $100M this year, but in 8-10 years when it's time to add more lanes to Phillips, 95, etc. How much would it cost to increase capacity along a LRT corridor?

That's assuming LRT is used.
The FEC is a freight rail corridor so commuter rail would have to implemented eventually instead of LRT. Also, statistical data associated with the mobility plan indicated that both rail and roadway widening improvements (in a few sections) will be needed over the next 20 years. Kaiser Soze, data and fiscal numbers also indicate that we can't solve our mobility issues by only focusing on roadway widening projects. They are the most expensive and unsustainable investment we can make and they breed more congestion in the long run.
