Nintendo's 'Super Mario Bros.' Turns 25
Landmark Video Game Has Sold More Than 40M Copies

Nintendo launched its landmark "Super Mario Bros." video game 25 years ago this week, introducing the world to Mario's land of green pipes, koopas, goombas and mushrooms.

The original game sold 40.2 million copies worldwide, popularized the side-scrolling video game format and kicked off elements of the Mushroom Kingdom still in use today, Nintendo said.

It also spawned a 1993 movie, "Super Mario Bros.," starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo that bombed at the box office. A short-lived TV show, "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!," aired for several months in 1989.

"Stimulated by advancements in technologies, we have always enjoyed developing the 'Super Mario Bros.' series," Nintendo designer and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said in a statement. "The 'Super Mario Bros.' series has always taken advantage of the latest technologies and is the fruit of the creativity of a number of my hard-working friends working as a team."

To celebrate, Nintendo has set up a special anniversary website, which includes a video that features game-play footage from "Super Mario Bros." through "Super Mario Bros. Galaxy 2." It also includes the "Super Mario" music and sound effects.

I heart SMB!  I can't view the website at work, but I'm sure it's going to be cool.

I love me some Mario Brothers.  Right now the WII remake is one of my favorite all time video games.  To be able to play competively with my 11 and 3 year old sons is great!
