There were two great consolidations.

The one that most people are aware of is the one in 1967.

But there had also been a previous landmark Consolidation in 1893.

That is when the cluster of small cities, towns and townships became the City of Greater Jacksonville.

Yukon, Durkeeville, Picketville, Murray Hill, Warren, Oakland, Fairfield, Brooklyn, Oklahoma, South Jacksonville, New Berlin, and La Villa were all separate towns, cities and townships that have been absorbed by the two Consolidations.

There are a number of others as well.

Did Yukon ever officially incorporate?  I recall that they had a railroad station and a post office.  It would not seem out of the question for them to be a town with its own government.  If so, I wonder why they did not mind merging with the city in 1968 when other separate municipalities (e.g. Baldwin and the Beaches) opted for some autonomy...

"Modern day" consolidation of the entire county is not a result of some perceived brilliance of the 1960's- the concept was conceived and presented to the voters in the 1920's............
