That's the overwhelming conclusion of a new Gallup-Healthways survey based on telephone interviews with 173,581 employed Americans over the past year.

Commuting takes a toll on physical health. Americans with longer commutes suffer higher levels of back pain, higher cholesterol, and higher levels of obesity.

Commuting also takes a toll on emotional health and happiness. Those who commute more worry more, experience less enjoyment, and feel less well-rested.

Commuting is a health and psychological hazard, not to mention the carnage and wasted time on our over-clogged roads. It's time to put commuting right beside smoking and obesity on the list of priorities for improving the health and well-being of Americans.

Poor posture while driving should be addressed more when kids are taking driver's ed.  The other two are probably more of a result of commuters not being able to resist the fast-food / soda / syrupy coffee drink urge.

Worry more than, experience less than, fell less rested than.....  someone who can either a)afford to not have to work; b)doesn't care to work; or c)I have no idea what the author of this poll is trying to convey.

Why don't we all just quit our jobs, pick up the hiippie lettuce and live in the woods.  We can be happy and skinny and lead lives with more enjoyment and less stress.

I like it ;)
