Jax Getting Smart with Tourism!

By the end of the year Jacksonville plans to start a river taxi that will give residents and tourists a unique perspective of the history and culture of Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve north of Mayport.

After a decade of starts and stops, Jacksonville is close to building a raised boardwalk and docking facility for the touring vessel dock at the Alimacani Boat Ramp at 11080 Heckscher Drive, about a half-mile north of Huguenot Memorial Park.

The article said it could also embark at Sisters Creek Marina.

Another one of those - why did it take 10 YEARS to build something as simple as this!?!

Yea...agreed it has probably been way too long to do anything, but I am sure that the environmentalists aren't too happy about this and have put up some sort of fight.

It is not likely that the environmental will fight this. They are more concerned with the effort to close beach driving in Huguenot Park. Plus this is an opportunity for education.

Pedro Menendez came up with the idea for the intercoastal waterway between the Tolomato and the San Sebastian Rivers... as it turned out, this was the VERY LAST segment built on the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway.

One hopes that the City can get the cooperation of the National Park Service to include a stop at the Kingsley Plantation which is between the two ends of the route.

I hope this comes to frutation. This definately can be a tourist attraction. Heck I would even go for a spin. I love history.

The Kingsley Plantation is my favorite historic site in Jax. (Aside from the one room left intact at the Cummer Art Gallery... awesome.)

I know it sounds, well, cheesy, but if we advertised 1/2 as well as 'South of the Border' has, the impact would be obscene. Think about it...we could be "the" stop for the millions upon millions of people who drive to Orlando every year w/ a family of kids.

Think about it...we could be "the" stop for the millions upon millions of people who drive to Orlando every year w/ a family of kids.

Yep, and couple this with Amtrak going downtown, Southeast High Speed Rail, the GADOT plans and the FACT that every single train that comes into the city will have it's cars shuffled around. These type of terminals usually include a fuel and service stop...roughly 30-45 minutes when passenger can and WILL get off and wander around the immediate area. Will the station be accommodating? Not highly likely. These knuckleheads will probably even include a coin operated coke machine... Anything heavier and you'll just be in Jacksonville SOL.

That being said, how about baby steps? Like....getting them (95 and 10 drivers) to plan on staying a night in Jax...getting our hotels filled up...and getting Riverside/Avondale to be known as a destination spot...
