But this time (April 2010) Brenda Boyston (SPAR ED) and Lisa Simon (Springfield resident and HPC member) are getting upset.  They both offer alternatives, explanations, compromises and the commission is having none of it.

Is it just me, or is the empression I get ......rubber stamping into oblivion?

Not just you. I think it is sad that the HPC board seems more interested in demo than saving our history. No where else do I see this but Jacksonville, we should change the name back to Cowford cause that is what DT is going to be soon enough, a cattle crossing.

Maybe we, and I mean myself included, need to show up for these meetings with our own pics & opinion and change the way the HPC treats historic demo. Next meeting is 3pm Wendesday right. I'll call Monday and see what the agenda is. Unless someone already knows?

Even if no Springfield props are on the agenda, showing up with SOS:  Save Our Springfield tags on would send a loud message.

YES!!!!!!!
Brenda at SPAR should have the agenda, or certainly HPC.

Arlingtondude

wow, what a shame. Seems like a repeat of all the demolitions from the early 1980's.

Cause nobody stood up and said HELL NO!

In this case I think nobody stood up and said "I will pay to have the roof fixed"

If it is that important, then why can't they raise the money to fix? Why can't they get the owner involved?

Just being devils advocate here.

Most if not all of these homes have been abandoned by the owners, or are owned by banks who could give a crap.  Banks aren't in the business of real estate. . . . .seems like they certainly are now, huh?

The city has set their policy to abate problems of abandoned homes through demolition.  Apparently focusing their budget on Code Compliance Officers, and a team to disconnect utilities, plumbing, sewer, etc. and then ultimately demo and haul away a historic home is a lot cheaper than boarding, securing, and watching.

Land value does not increase.  The value of a home can increase.  The tax is greater with a home on the land than with a home that is not.  So it all seems like a double whammy.  Then how difficult the land becomes to sell b/c it has a demolition lien on it.  It's a lose, lose, lose situation.

Not a very well thought out system.

Time to change the system huh? Be vocal, show at meetings, whatever it takes. Business as  usual, screw that.
