The annual race from St. John's River Inlet to St. Augustine Inlet was held this weekend.  More than a dozen sailboats from Jacksonville made the journey in beautiful conditions.  Thunderstorms were visible on the shore, but we breezed through about 6 miles off shore without incident.

The race was sponsored by the North Florida Cruising Club.  http://sailjax.com/

It is a fun club and a wonderful way to spend a long weekend.

I got a great view from the Shands bridge. All the different colored sails filling the St. Johns was was awesome.
And though I long to embrace, I will not replace my priorities: humour, opinion, a sense of compassion, creativity and a distaste for fashion.

this race was offshore, not in the river
Jacksonville: We're not vertically challenged, just horizontally gifted!

Whoops! I got this race confused with the event in the SJR last month.

No whoops needed.  Last month's Mug Race was a sight to see as well.

There are races each weekend through the fall and then, again, in the spring.  Different yacht clubs sponsor each event.  By far the largest and the oldest is the Mug Race.  Some are offshore and some are river buoy races.  All types of sailboats race, hot sport boats and large cruisers.

Our river is greatly underutilized as compared to other cities with comparable water access.  Part of it is probably b/c our sailing season is all year long as opposed to up north where you must pull your boat out of the water.  In Wisconsin, the sailing season is relatively short so the waterways are filled up as soon as the weather cooperates.
