Who Says The South Was Backward?

Roll back your clock to 1863, when the South sprung this ship and it's twin sister on the stunned Federal blockading fleet in Charleston. The CSS Palmetto State and the CSS Chicora, looked like this model:

Fast foward to today, and the Navy is launching it's newest Destroyers, the Admiral Zumwalt Class.

Damn! Somebody must have been reading our handbook on this one, shall we say they were originally designed in DIXIE? Looks like family to me!

I love the old ironclad ships, these new DDG destroyers are cool too, similar looks but the DDG-1000s are designed to be super-stealthy with a radar profile closer to the size of a fishing boat and almost as quiet as a submarine when running. Instead of big guns, they fire missiles so they can have a really minimalist exterior design. It must be pretty effective because pretty much every modern military has a destroyer/missile frigate with an almost identical exterior design, I think the british launched their new ships a couple of years ago and I think the french have one coming out soon as well.

Colombia built and launched one themselves too, and it looks even more like the Palmetto State! Designed for light seas, but mostly vast inland waterways... As in 1,000's and 1,000's of miles of them. Somewhere I have a short video, and it's pretty cool, they are quite proud of it.
