Breakfast @ Tommy's

I'll admit that I haven't been to Tommy's place on Walnut ( between 5 th & 6th on Walnut) for breakfast in probably 8 years.  Long time ago, breakfast there was a styrofoam cup with eggs, bacon, grits and cheese.  It was named "breakfast in a cup" and I was told, invented during a hurricane years before when all plates were used up.  It was tasty and filling.  The store was crammed full of somewhat dusty little items and the cook was perched behind a little opening in the counter.  I am not much of a breakfast eater, and forgot about the place except a quick nod at it as I passed by.

Yesterday I met some friends at Tommy's for breakfast and was so amazed at the transformation!  Now, it is a quaint little place with funky antiques and parts adorning the surfaces and tables.  It is the look that the manufactured Cracker Barrels strive for.  Very comfortable, very relaxing, very inviting.

Breakfast was perfect, cheap, quick and tasty.  I had sausage and eggs with grits and toast for under $4.00.

I highly recommend stopping in if you haven't done so already, and I am lamenting these many years of doing without the bacon and eggs.

Does anyone have any information about his hours?  Does he serve lunch?

No lunch yet, although there has been talk..... Tommy's is awesome we have breakfast in a cup all the time and the cheese omelet is great, one of my favs. You just cannot beat the prices at Tommy's!

They tried opening on Saturdays a while back, but did not get the crowds they get weekdays.

I love Tommy's, I'm not much of a breakfast person though so I don't make it in as often as I'd like. The food is cheap and delicious and Mark alway's brings a smile to my face. They are a Springfield classic.

That explains it. We are 'weekend breakfast warriors' but rarely make it out for breakfast during the week. Our neighborhood friends tell us the breakfast is great, and just about monthly we drive by Tommy's to see if it's open on Saturday's yet...  of course, it'd take more than the two of us to make it worthwhile to open!
Corona Light, please. With a lime.

What time do they open on the weekdays?

I have stopped by several times for Breakfast.  The atmosphere is comfortable and friendly.  Can't beat the price on the food.  I think they would do well with a weekend breakfast.  They should partner with Three Layers.  Maybe they could offer their coffee or hot chocolate on weekend mornings?

Tommy is open Monday through Friday from 6 to 11 AM...breakfast only, and it's delicious and fast. You can eat it inside or take out. He has a pool table in the side room too.

Tommy will not partner with Three Layers, and why would they? They are different and in business for themselves.

Tommy has been there for about 30 years, he's a self-made man and does quite well on his own. He used to be open in the evenings and weekends, but running the business and doing all the cooking himself, aside from cleaning it, those kind of hours were and are too much. His breakfast business does so well that the hours and days he's open are more than sufficient to make a very comfortable living.

I know this thread is kinda old...sorry!

But, I had to ask...is Tommy's still open? Been hearing about this breakfast in a cup thing for years...

Thanks Chris.

I think they're open for breakfast from 7am to 11am M-F. No weekends. Bring cash. :)

FYI, I prefer their breakfast plates. The salmon patty plate is so southern & amazing.
