NPR is IMO the best thing we have in radio here. I don't think there is enough intellectual interest here or perhaps anywhere else in the south to support what I would consider good radio. By that I mean radio that informs and stimulates the intellect. Radio to most people here is music. So most people here are quite happy with head-bopping music all day along. I have an all- tube Grundig. Shortwave is the way to go.

You don't have to have a license to listen, just to broadcast.  They have even dropped the Morse code requirement for a broadcast license.  Go to the FCC website.
