My husband and I have found out this week that the post offices (including the main branch downtown) are only picking up the mail from the mail boxes (even at the branches, for gosh sakes), and processing the mail ONE time per day, at 4:45 pm...??  Serious, look on the sticker inside the lid.  So much for being able to run downtown to the main post office to mail a payment, secure in the knowledge that it would be processed and on its way at 5:30 am the next business day. (what...you've never had to wait for payday to pay bills sometime?)  What are they doing in there all day until they have to do some actual work at 4:45 pm?

Cancellation (postmarking) and sortation of first class mail collected during the day begins at around 4pm using automated equipment.  Mail going outside the Jax area is on its way by midnight.  Mail for the Jax area (zips starting with 320 and 322) is sorted by automated equipment to each letter carrier route and in the order the route is carried from about 10pm to 8am.  Because of automation the time its retrieved from the collection box is not as important as it used to be.

The automated equipment is being serviced during the day.  Almost all the cancellation and sortation is done at night.

Thank you for the info.  Appreciate it very much.
