Thrasher thrashes Quiggle, takes Jim King's seat

Former House Speaker John Thrasher won his return to Tallahassee in a walk, storming past three opponents Tuesday in a bitter special election to choose the successor for the late Sen. Jim King.

With almost all precincts reporting, Thrasher had 39 percent of the vote in the five-county district, easily outpacing businessman Dan Quiggle, whose anti-tax campaign garnered 27 percent.

Former Duval County School Board member Stan Jordan, who also served four terms in the House, and former Jacksonville City Councilman Art Graham trailed with about 17 percent of the vote each.

Thrasher won in each District 8 county: Duval, Flagler, Nassau, St. Johns and Volusia, according to final unofficial returns.

Claiming victory in downtown Jacksonville, Thrasher said he hoped to build on King's formidable legacy.

"Jim is impossible to replace, and I would never seek to do that, and his shoes can never be filled," Thrasher said.

He also ripped into secretive, purportedly independent groups that pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into ads savaging his record as speaker.
