Dominick Dunne

Brother John Dunne and his wife, Joan Didion.

QuoteNEW YORK â€" Best-selling author and journalist Dominick Dunne has died. He was 83.

His son, actor-director Griffin Dunne, said that Dunne had been battling bladder cancer for some time. He died Wednesday at his home in Manhattan.

Dominick Dunne didn't let his cancer stop him from working. In September, against his doctor's orders and his family's wishes, he flew to Las Vegas to attend O.J. Simpson's kidnap-robbery trial â€" a postscript to his coverage of Simpson's 1995 murder trial that spiked Dunne's fame.

Born in 1925 in Hartford, Conn., Dunne was part of a famous family that included his brother, novelist and screenwriter John Gregory Dunne; his brother's wife, author Joan Didion; and his son, Griffin.

His actress daughter, Dominique Dunne, was slain in 1982 when she was 22.

Too many pass, and only then do I hear of them. He might have done work I'm familiar with, but I don't recognize his name.

Stephen, I would like to ask a favor, as you are clearly well read. I need a "must read" list of books/writers.

This seems like as good a place as any to make such a request, and what better way to honor the memory of a writer than to enlighten others to the great works.

I tend towards nonfiction, so perhaps I should start with some novelists?
