National Director Search Yield Results in Orlando and Charlotte

While the debate over whether or not to waive the city law that requires our Planning Director to have planning experience (sounds crazy, I know) continues, we thought it would be worthwhile to do a little research on how a couple of other cities about our size have handled the hiring process for a Planning Director.  We called and spoke with the Planning Directors of Orlando and Charlotte.  Dean Grandin is the P.D. of Orlando and Debra Campbell is the P.D. of Charlotte.

That the Mayor would sacrifice the potential of the city with the appointment of a candidate who is unqualified for this important position is an insult to the taxpayers of Jacksonville. The problem really is that the Mayor really has no idea what a planning director is supposed to be doing, so his candidate seems to him to be qualified, albeit to do nothing.

Political patronage appointments are a vital cog in the wheel of the Jacksonville political apparatus. Without them, there would be many homeless bureaucrats that would create an overcrowded condition at the bus station and in the city parks.

but he had the gonads to quash it and not give in the Judges' demands. I think we should step back and give the Mayor some latitude on his decisions. He has so far been on the money with his decisions!

Yes, that's right. Those miserable judges that legislate from the bench! Thats quite right, he has been on the MONEY on every decision.
