One of the fun things to do in Callahan happens at the Allied Veterans of the World, Inc. & Affiliates Post #5 on US Hwy 1 about one mile north of Callahan.  Bingo is available Friday, Saturday and Monday. Doors open at 4 pm Friday and Monday and 3 pm Saturday.  There are 19 jackpots on Friday, 21 on Saturday and 10 on Monday with special prizes available at each.  There are lots of special surprises and Monday is a "paper only" night -- all you can play for $25.  This is also a Vegas Fun Zone, open Monday thru Saturday 10 am - ??, closed Sunday.  There are more than 50 Vegas-Style games plus electronic bingo daily.
Allied Veterans of the World, Inc., & Affiliates Post #5 is part of an organization of veterans helping veterans.  http://www.alliedveteransinc.com/.  The material below is taken from that website:
â€œWe pride ourselves on being veterans helping veterans. Since 1979, Allied Veterans of the World has donated time, effort and money to veteran and first responder organizations around the country, primarily in the Southeast.
â€œWe’re here for veterans in need, and we proudly serve them primarily through contributions to Veterans Administration hospitals and clinics. We raise funds through bingo, car washes, internet centers and cookouts.
â€œWe assist the dedicated VA volunteers and medical professionals with funds that help them better serve our healing veterans. In the past year alone, Allied Veterans of the World, Inc. & Affiliates presented more than $2.5 million to veteran and first responder organizations.
â€œBut there’s much more to do. Explore our site; support our troops, and God Bless America!”
Post #5 is just one of many and they’ve helped Callahan and area residents in many ways.  They have a senior’s dinner every so often and at Christmas the post sponsors a program providing gifts for children who otherwise wouldn’t get much in the way of presents.
If you’re interested in learning more about this organization or becoming a part of it, check out the website above or come visit the post.  You can also reach them by phone at (904) 879-0774.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

You really can say that.  We have our own GoKart Speedway near the Multi-Purpose Building on US Hwy 1 and Musselwhite. Go to http://www.callahanspeedway.com/. Our West Nassau Historical Society has a museum. http://www.wnhsfl.org/ You can find it in next to the big red caboose. We also have tours of the area from time to time.   There's also Four Creeks State Forest http://www.fl-dof.com/state_forests/four_creeks.html.  We have a number of places handling horses and riding, too.  Come on out and take a look.  I'll think you'll enjoy it.  We really do have a lot to offer.
May the road rise up to meet you.

May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

RE: the comment just before yours, I'll say this:  "Garbage," like so many other things, is in the eyes of the beholder.  There are those who make legitimate comments and those who make fun of what others write because it makes them feel more important.  I know which I would prefer to be and I'm sure most of our readers do, too.  I will try not to make disparaging remarks about your comments and I hope you'll grant me the same courtesy.

Don't take it personally. It's that Jacksonville inferiority complex rearing it's ugly face again. Since most of the larger cities in the country takes shots regularly at us, sometimes Jacksonvillians feel the need to mock cities like Callahan to make us sophistamicated.

I won't take any shots though, since i've been on the recieving end of someone speaking ill of my home city 1,000,000,000 times.

Perhaps people in other cities take shots at Jacksonvillians (I like that word) because they're envious.  I think Jacksonville and the surrounding area are a great place to be -- except I'm really used to four seasons and, since I live on a dirt road, I really don't like all the rain.  Otherwise, I think it's just great.  There are a lot of fun things to do and interesting places to go and I've lived in many other cities during my military service.  I just wish I had a paved road, driveway and walkway -- but that's something (at least the driveway and walkway) I'll have to pay for and I don't have the money just now.  Who knows, maybe I'll win the lottery or write a book and make lots of money -- don't I wish.  Irish blessings upon you and yours.  MAC

Hey, I don't see a FUN THINGS TO DO IN JAX thread yet.  Don't knock it 'till you've tried it.  Callahan BBQ, yum.  There is life beyond the Doo-Val County line.

You have no idea how nice it is to see someone post who is more of a "newbie" than I.  Welcome aboard.  I'm looking forward to seeing more of your comments.  MAC

It was sarcasm.

I just don't have the need to really travel across the Metro, unless it is dinner at an old coworkers place.
