Dog Walker

Spiller's Gallery and Framing was there in 1979 and probably much earlier.

Wasn't there an A&P Grocery directly opposite the Derby House, in the Fans and Stoves building?
I know there was a grocery there, but don't remember the chain.  Maybe Setzers?

The news stand goes back at least to the early '60's and maybe the '50's.

And don't forget the Riverside Gown Shop in the 40's-60's where everyone in Riverside and Avondale bought their prom and coming-out dresses.  (Oh my, how the meanings of some words have changed with the years!)  Debutantes!

I knew the owners of Riverside Gown.  They eventually moved it to Mandarin before selling it to someone who finally went out of business with it.

The news stand definitely goes way back but not sure how far.  It's been their since my childhood as I recall.

We also knew the owner of the 5 Points Movie Theater.  My recollection was seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey, Mary Poppins, Sound of Music, and many other great movies there.

Like San Marco and many places around Jax, I think there was a Stand N' Snack shop in/near 5 Points in the 60's/70's.

One of the great restaurants in Jax history was Fred Abood's Green Derby on the corner of the Blue Cross/Blue Shield property on Riverside Avenue.

Tads Restaurant was on Forest Street in Brooklyn until DOT condemned it for the street reconstruction.

Just on the edge of Riverside, Sandy's Steer Room for the best steaks in Jax, was located in the Jacksonville Farmers Market near Stockton and Beaver.

I don't know the answer but another old Jax grocery chain was Daylight Grocery.

I believe it was actually a Winn-Dixie.

there were two records stores late 90s "Club Culture", which was also in san marco for a bit and B= Music in early 2000.

SunKing

Your list left out Cisco's Pizza from the 70s maybe early 80s as well.  It used to be where the Firehouse Subs is now.  I remember it had plywood cutout themed seating made into boats and trucks and trains that you could sit in.  I used to take the 3 Ortega (bus) when I was 13-14, eat pizza, look at nudie magazines at the back of the newstand, run around the parks.  that was going Downtown to me.

Bremer Brace Company moved from a Park Street location in Brooklyn into a two story house behind 5 Points on Margaret St. in 1942.  It was remodeled into the current modern looking building with the big hole in the side in 1977-78, but the old house is still inside it.  A least four generations of Jacksonville citizens have been treated there.

Does anyone remember the Naked Pear? They had several locations. One was on the 2nd floor of Owens. It was a really cool botique. I'm not sure how long it was there.....
I think the name is correct.

Another one is gone!  Walked by Rainbow and Stars this morning coming from breakfast at the Derby House and it is being converted into an antique mall.

Wayne Wood, OD probably has more photographs of Jacksonville than anyone.  Maybe we could get him to do a book on the "Historical Commercial Districts of Jacksonville" to go along with his other books.  I'll bet he has a lot of photos of 5 Poiints.
