Florida: Embryonic Stem Cell Budget Amendment

A vote for this amendment was to remove a section of the budget that prohibits state funds to be used for embryonic stem cell research.  The amendment failed and the banning language is still contained in the House only budget.

We might be looking at a Special Session or Session extension, so this is still a very contentious section of the budget and the Republican leaders should know how their constituents feel.  Rep. Dean Cannon is the chief budget negotiator for the House.

Florida is fourth in the nation for its biomedical industry! Lets not scare the biomed industry by inserting ideology in science.

For those of you who are wondering,......the stem cells used are recycled from discarded cells from fertility procedures with proper consent.

Fla. House drops Cuba trips, stem cell issues from budget
The Associated Press
Published: May 3, 2009

Bans on using state dollars for university embryonic stem cell research and student trips to Cuba
and other terrorist-linked countries will not be in Florida's budget.

Rep. David Rivera, the House's chief education budget negotiator, agreed Sunday to drop those provisions from his chamber's spending plan.

No similar provisos are in the Senate's version of the state budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1. Talks on other issues continued Sunday.

This is quite a relief since Florida is fourth in the nation for the BioTech industry, and restrictions that hurt science would have reduced the desirability of Florida for Biotech expansion.
