I received this email on Tuesday at work and didn't really question the street closures.

Downtown Information & Safety Alert

Street Closures for Thursday, March 19

March 17, 2009

The following streets will be closed for a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Special Event on Thursday, March 19 from 7am - 4pm.

- Monroe Street from Main Street to Laura Street
- Adams Street from Main Street to Laura Street
- Ocean Street from Monroe Street to Union Street

The meters will also be bagged on these streets.

Then I saw this article on First Coast News tonight and it now makes sense:

Former President George W. Bush To Visit Jacksonville
Posted By: Donna Deegan     1 hr ago

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Former Presisdent George W. Bush will be in Jacksonville tomorrow.

Our news partner the Florida Times Union says Mr. Bush will be attending a private luncheon to thank local republicans for their support.

He will reportedly speak about the economy and give an update on the progress of his presidential library in Dallas.

The event is at the Carling, a condo and office complex on Adams Street.

Downtown streets will be closed immediately before and after the visit and parking will be restricted from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on some of those streets.

Former President speak about the economy......will he bring an encyclopedia or will Dick Cheney be there to pull hecklers from the crowd?

How big a library is needed for one picture book?

Someone mentioned elsewhere on MJ that he might establish a home in the Jax area?  I wonder if he went "house hunting" after lunch?  :D

By the way, I was surprised to read only 14 people attended.  Wow.  I guess his "friends" are disappearing fast, absent being the incumbent president.  This was supposed to be red hot Bush country.
Hey!  Whatever happened to just plain ol' COMMON SENSE!!

Well, the original story on news4jax reported that tickets to the luncheon were $50,000 each. I don't care who you are...it would be tough to get 14 people in one city to pay that amount for dinner, much less lunch. :)

Or...where you are from...14 people I think is very gracious at $50,000 a pop; now let's see...14 x 50,000 = $700,000.00! Not bad for a couple of hours work and then on back to Big "T!"

Stop the presses - Get their names, we could use them for a new transportation museum that will be built in 5 years, once we see a kick in from the federal dollars of Corrine Brown, because she is all about transportation in Jax.
