NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The final week of January began with a bloodbath for the job market, as over 71,400 more cuts were announced on Monday alone.

At least six companies from manufacturing and service industries announced cost-cutting initiatives that included slashing thousands of jobs.

More than 200,000 job cuts have been announced so far this year, according to company reports. Nearly 2.6 million jobs were lost over 2008, the highest yearly job-loss total since 1945.

In January alone, companies have announced more 210,000 job cuts.

SEATTLE - Starbucks is reporting that its profit dropped 69 percent in its fiscal first quarter and it plans to close more stores and cut more jobs.

The company says it will close 300 underperforming stores in addition to the 600 it already planned to close in the U.S.

The closures could result in the loss of 6,000 jobs. Starbucks will also lay off about 700 non-store employees.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Macy's Inc. said Monday that it's cutting 7,000 jobs - including 5,100 in its stores - and centralizing some of its corporate operations in an effort to reduce costs amid an increasingly difficult retail environment.

The company also projected earnings for the fiscal year just beginning that are well below analysts' estimates.

Macy's shares fell 7% in afternoon trading.

Previously it was 71,400.
