Jacksonville ranked 10th-laziest major city, with residents preferring driving over walking for short trips

QuoteSome 48% of Americans say they use their vehicles for 2-minute trips instead of walking or bicycling.
Jacksonville residents are apparently among the laziest in the nation, according to a new study of the 30 biggest U.S. cities published by Tinting Chicago.

The car care company based in Chicago conducted a survey to find out which U.S. motorists take the shortest drives. Jacksonville ranked 10th in the nation when measuring which drivers are most likely to take short trips in their vehicles.

The analysis found that 61% of Jacksonville motorists use their vehicles for trips involving a drive of two minutes or less instead of walking or riding a bicycle because they acknowledged they're lazy.

Other elements of the survey also found Jacksonville drivers do have some reasons for using their vehicles instead of walking short distances. Some 47% of Jacksonville drivers said they use their vehicle instead of walking or biking due to safety concerns.

Unsurprising, given the city's urban fabric. Enormous parts of the city are near inhospitable for anything that isn't a private automobile, and we have historically been pretty bad at doing much to effectively change that or prevent it from worsening. A lot of master planned developments have given some lip service to the idea of not requiring a car for every journey, but not to an enduring degree.
So, to the young people fighting in this movement for change, here is my charge: march in the streets, protest, run for school committee or city council or the state legislature. And win. - Ed Markey

EVen when I lived in reiverside and things were walkable, it's still 100* and 100% humidity here. Its; hot, and my truck has AC...

so it's not JUST because I'm lazy...  ;D

I wonder how other Sunbelt cities rank?

From the spreadsheet linked in the article linked above https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZT8x4Zf_rLDpDsOYXPUDg1Hi0Aju9AJ3wfmXUT8cNsE/edit?pli=1&gid=0#gid=0

Where People Take the Shortest Drives
1. Ft. Worth
2. Las Vegas
3. Houston
4. Oklahoma City
5. Austin
6. San Antonio
7. Memphis
8. Dallas
9. Louisville
10. Jax
Other Sunbelt cities in the top 30
12. Charlotte, NC
13. Los Angeles
14. El Paso
15. Phoenix
18. Columbus
21. Nashville

Another table
"Would rather sit in traffic than get to their destination quicker by walking"
1. Houston
2. Las Vegas
3. Dallas
4. Memphis
5. San Antonio
6. El Paso
7. Austin
7. Oklahoma City
7. San Diego
10. Ft. Worth

Depending if Oklahoma City is in the "Sunbelt" all of the top 10 in both lists are in the Sunbelt. The remaining cities in the Shortest Drives list of 30 are large metros in the Northeast, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest.
