Post Street side of Five Points

Recently stumbled upon an old photograph taken on Post Street, facing the intersection of Park & Post. In the photo you can see the former Abernathy building, as well as Kelly's gas station to the immediate right. A little further down to the right, just beyond Abernathy, there sits a house.. a HOUSE.. and the additions of the old Five Points Deli, Laundromat and Frank's Barber Shop didn't even exist yet. I've always wondered, ever since I was a kid who grew up in the neighborhood, the Deli to be exact, why was there an empty lot just to the left of the parking lot, especially considering there is work being done on that very lot today with a new brick & mortar building going up in it's place. When I showed my grandmother the photo, it took her a few seconds before she remembered that they were tearing down that old house by the time she started working at the deli. Absolutely wild, you never ever see photos of the Post Street side of these buildings and I've been looking for nearly 2 decades on this site and forum threads for one. Also, it's pretty neat to see the billboard atop the old Abernathy, I feel like some of that metal work is still up there to this day.

That is pretty cool. I am not as familiar with the area as many here are, but if Abernathy is where Hawkers is now, it looks like the bases of those signs are still there. https://www.google.com/maps/@30.31539,-81.6809612,60a,35y,107.09h,48.21t/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu

Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

@Houseboat Mike, I do believe it is still there and a shame that someone with RAP hasn't thought of doing something with it to represent Five Points or Riverside in some way.

@Tacachale how neat, right?! I do believe there is So much more out there still left to be uncovered & seen from decades gone by.

Unfortunately, those old billboards would no longer meet the current signage code. That's the result of the overreaching compromises that COJ entered into due to the late Bill Brinton's billboard lawsuits in the 80's, 90's and 2000's.

I seem to recall reading about another one (not sure if single or double) on the roof of Chamblin's Uptown...something about spiffing up the corridor where lots of traffic would see a message about all the City has to offer.  Hopefully that will jog someone's memory and they can chime in.

One can nitpick the details of our sign ordinance, but, overall, it has done wonders to make our City much more aesthetically pleasing.  Just go to other parts of the country where billboards and other signs are rampant to see how ugly things can get. Start with driving I-95 through parts of Georgia or South Carolina.  And, some of us remember when many store parking lots in town had portable sign boards with rows of blinking lights to compete for our attention.  Or, when you looked down our streets, all you saw was an orgy of signs and nothing else.... including no trees or landscaping to ease the eyes.

Hats off to Brinton and others for their lasting contribution to our City.  One of the few things we have gotten right over the years at City Hall.
