QuoteThe announcement came after Minor League Baseball decided to end its season nationwide due to COVID-19 concerns.

So, to the young people fighting in this movement for change, here is my charge: march in the streets, protest, run for school committee or city council or the state legislature. And win. - Ed Markey

I'm bit surprised it took this long to make the decision.

I think it was somehow tied into the Major League decision. But, yeah, this seemed pretty obvious a few weeks ago.

It is tied to MLB but they still should have made those decisions a while ago. Minor League players for the Shrimp aren't under contract by the Shrimp, they're under contract by the Miami Marlins and assigned to the Shrimp (or one of Miami's 8 minor league teams) for development. MLB frankly screwed them a bit - they were dealing with the labor issues with MLB that they just didn't take the time to focus on the minors

Random thought - if enough MLB players opt out of the mini-season for health, social, or whatever (paycheck) reasons, it seems that could open up some slots for Minor League players - most from AAA, so no direct benefit to Jumbo Shrimps.

already happening - MLB teams have expanded rosters for the short season

The entire minor league system is going to change completely very soon. I  assume the Shrimp will survive based on the facility and attendance but many teams will disappear...

In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Agree the Jumbo Shrimp should be fine if this new arrangement of shrinking MLB teams to only having 4 affiliated teams developing players goes through.

The main thing that gives me pause with the reshuffling of the minor leagues was the proposal that independent unaffiliated team that don't make the new franchise cut were encouraged to staff their team with unpaid amateur players to stay in business. I do not see this going very well at all.
