QuoteA fact sheet attached to Ordinance 2019-527 says: "The purchase will assist in redeveloping a vacant property in the downtown Northbank, eliminate blight conditions in the area and provide job opportunities to residents of the area."

The document also states the city would realign Forest Street with the old Fire Station No. 5 property, providing better access to the firehouse parcel and surrounding properties, as well as improve parking for Sydney J. Gefen Riverwalk Park.

Say goodbye to the old station. It will be interesting to see what some of the other stuff proposed will actually look like.

It makes too much sense for firehouse subs to move the fire station and open up a flagship store in it. Does anyone know the Sorensen brothers? Lol

That will never happen.

Nope. It's a 109 year old building that would need tax credits and incentives to make it work onsite. It also doesn't make financial sense to move it considering for some reason, we can't live with the intersection as is. It's good as gone.

It's gone. I look forward to future Jacksonville generations writing about the structures bulldozed by the Curry administration.

I lament a lot of the other more high-profile demolitions that have gone down DT, but a lil' ole fire house that is abandoned and doesn't match the growth of the neighborhood around it doesn't seem like anything I will miss.

This structure, as well as the old houses at Duval and Catherine, seem to be misguidedly idolized by some members of this forum simply because they're old. Collecting hidden treasures (Cowford Chophouse, 11E, The Carling, etc. ) vs hoarding old garbage (those old dilapidated houses, this old dilapidated and disused firehouse, the disused Jones College in MH) A cynical hot take? Yeah. But I reckon getting overly attached to old buildings just because they're old seems like an unnecessary pluck at my own heartstrings for no real reason.

The challenge that I have is what's replacing all of these demolished structures? Right now the answer every time is "grass field".

How many millions have we spent at this point to create grass?
