QuoteTo round off our week of successful adaptive reuse examples of former festival marketplaces across the country, today we stay in Florida and take a look at a center that was recently acquired and renovated for less than Jacksonville is prepared to spend to buy out Sleiman Enterprises, remove existing small businesses and raze the Jacksonville Landing.

Wow passive-aggressive much, Lake? I understand you wanting to keep a reasonable and civil forum of discourse here but with your article postings it's like you really want to shout, "The Curry administration's ideas and vision of Downtown Jacksonville redevelopment are nuttier, cheesier, and more repulsive that month-old Chinese chicken pesto salad left out in the sun!" or words to that affect.

There is an inherit frustration to the fact that this space exists for the purpose of people wanting to be educated and inspired to make our urban environment more viable and vibrant whilst that same messages seemed to be ignored by the movers and shakers that should be embracing and implementing these policies. Meanwhile we must keep fighting the good fight and keep shedding light in the dark - because maybe one day...

Of course at the rate this administration is going, maybe one day we'll be subject to Adaptive Reuse: Aleppo forum posts in the near future  ::)

These articles have been a great way to educate readers on a very relevant talking point - adaptive reuse vs. demolition of a festival marketplace. I can't think of a better way to express disagreements than with hard factual examples of alternative routes.

There's a lot more out there. We ran five in a row so I wanted to mix it up today with another topic. Nevertheless, if the interest is there, we can definitely share additional examples.

Please do. I find the topic strangely compelling.

Will do!

It's kind of like watching a car crash - city after city makes the same expensive mistake. But seeing what happens later and how they reuse the sites is very interesting.

Seconded - young Wacca inexplicably adored all festival marketplaces in their 80s state, and it is fascinating to me to see how they are being repurposed.  Much as I'm aware of its problems, I'd be deeply saddened to see the Landing razed.
The tourist would realize at once that he had struck the Land of Flowers - the City Beautiful!
