Pretty sure the gays gave you a ton of support during your campaign, where you at Gurl?!

Brosche voted for the HRO in committee.

^^ That. Sounds like you might need to do a little research, Jax Friend.

I canvased with HRC when they backed Brosche. I was there the night she won and refused to take pictures with those wearing HRC shirts. I get that she is crossing the aisle to vote in favor of this bill. I'm not expecting her to come out as the leader in all this. It just makes my stomach turn to hear that she supports the bill, but immediately follows up with, "if religious organizations are protected." I don't want wishy washy support, especially if I'm going door to door for you, and especially if you are taking funds from an organization that is supposed to be furthering my rights.

Perhaps I was wrong for calling her out. Of coarse she is better than Kimberly, that bitch grouped us all together with bestiality. It would just be nice if the person who's face was emblazoned all over HRC pamphlets was actually one of the leaders of the cause. I get it is politics and HRC wanted to secure her vote, but I want someone up there who understands that this is the gay fight, not the fight to protect the most federally protected entity as it is. Screw churches!

Brosche is supportive of LGBT issues but I don't think she ever intended to be a champion. Community activists sure hoped she would be and promoted her as one because she was infinitely better than her opponent, Kim Daniels, on this and other issues (in true Jacksonville Democrats fashion, Daniels was rewarded for her embarrassing loss in a countywide City Council race by winning a Democratic district race in the Florida House, which shows how backward local party politics can be).

Brosche is a Republican and that position doesn't help her with large segments of her actual base, and may take away from the things she really focuses on and excels at on Council. In fact, I heard that during the campaign, every time the HRC flyers went out promoting her, it actually hurt her in the polls, and helped Daniels. Any kind of anti-church stance would have a similar effect. Regardless, she's one of the best Council reps, and replaced the very worst one of the last term, and again, she supported the HRO in committee. I guess we'll see how she votes tonight, but current evidence suggests she's not remotely one of the ones to watch out for.

meh. the flyers obviously didnt hurt her in the polls.  she won.

convincingly.

HRO isn't anti church, thats nonsense. Churches are specifically protected under the existing law.

And the republicans went on to reward some of the dumbest council people in the city with higher office this cycle as well.  We don't have a good grasp on who we are sending to the State House yet, Its not really a political focus of anyone in Jville for some reason.

Anna is a great councilmember though, but I think you are reading the political tea leaves incorrectly.  Even Curry has changed his public tactics, anticipating the election storms that come up over the next two cycles.  Voting against the HRO isn't going to help but a few locals politically.  Especially as the anti HRO forces are quietly for this version of the bill.

Her staff said it hurt her in the polls and helped Daniels. It didn't end up mattering, as Brosche was one of the best candidates of 2015 and Daniels was the single worst. I doubt that at this point, supporting the HRO (in any version) hurts any pol, at least not beyond other factors.

The HRO isn't anti-church, Jax Friend's statement was. It's obviously not something any Republican candidate would ever do.

Kim Daniels is the Democrats' version of Clay Yarborough, who also was rewarded with a Florida House seat despite his problems. The difference is that Yarborough won his Council elections. Kim Daniels was given an un-losable House seat after an embarrassing loss (and an equally embarrassing term). And she's not even the only one - Tracie Davis of House District 16 (my district) lost both the 2015 Supervisor of Elections race, and the 2016 House District 16 primary, but was appointed to HD16 by the party after Reggie Fulwood stepped down due to his corruption charges. Not really a high bar there.

I have no idea why people don't focus more on the state legislature here. It's probably why we keep getting hosed on state funding compared to other areas with more connected delegations.

good gawd can we pass this thing already.

Stephen- what do you predict this evening from contacts you've had?

also curious if anyone else has some informed thoughts on how hros and the like could affect churches:

do churches have the right to refuse gay weddings?  To not have proper bathroom facilities?

it seems with gay marriage as the law of the land and a HRO on the books maybe they can't?  I'm quite ignorant on the subject, but how would not allowing gay marriage be any different, legally, than refusing a black bride and groom on the basis of race?

Or maybe churches can do that already?  God I hope not.  Appreciate any knowledgeable posters sharing

This and most HROs have exemptions for churches, religious organizations, and private membership clubs. I don't think any ordinances anywhere in the country require churches to perform same sex weddings or other weddings they may object to (at least, churches don't have to perform weddings for people who aren't members; I doubt they could get away with denying weddings based on race, however, but that would be a matter of federal law rather than local ordinance).

Our HRO (like most) doesn't require anyone to have certain bathroom facilities. For entities that have public accommodations, they would have to allow transgender people to use the bathroom of their expressed identity. This wouldn't apply to churches.

There's some question about the wording relating to the religious exemptions. It may be too vague to be enforceable as it's written; hopefully they hammer that out tonight.
