Ran across this, this morning. The rankings of mayoral salaries in major US cities. Mayor Curry lands at #13 highest at $174,000...

Different types of government. In some cities the mayor is a much weaker position in relation to the city council, and in some the real power is with a hired city manager. In Orlando, the city mayor is in many ways a less significant position than the Orange County Mayor, just as the city government is less powerful than the county.

Due to consolidation our mayor has a much larger role than mayors of other cities that you could consider much bigger due to their metro areas.  Orlando's population is something like 250k and Jacksonville's is around 850k, not including the beaches that COJ still provides services for as the county government.

It isn't.  There is no separation for the TYPE of government. Some Mayors, like JAX operate under a Strong Mayor government whereas others operate under a Council-Manager government. Under the latter, the day-to-day operations are handled by a City Manager. Charlotte (#52 on the list) is an example of that. The Mayor under a Council-Manager has much less responsibility and is more of a Chairman of the Board as opposed to a CEO type that a Strong Mayor would be.   

Most big cities in the Northeast have Strong Mayors.  That is  much less common in the Southeast.

I was actually the opposite. I was surprised Buddy Dyer's salary was so high for a city that is a third the size of Jacksonville and where there is a Mayor of Orange County as well. Jacksonville is the 12th largest city so Curry's salary makes sense. Orlando is a bigger metro, but the city only ranks 73rd behind Lincoln, Nebraska. Both make more than the Governor of Florida.

Yeah, I was really surprised to see the low end. It looks like NC was prevalent in the "under $30k" crowd.

I lived in NC for a year - it sucks pretty bad - my most hated state

HOW IN THE HELL is the mayor of detroit #10 @ $177,000??!?!?!

and our mayor, cut his pay $50-70k .. make him hungry to earn more, produce. those broad daylight shootings at the landing (which are the sequel to the Art Walk shootings?!) should have triggered a recount election

Given our mayor's prior personal career, I don't think a pay cut would make him "hungry" in any sense of the word.
