This Sunday, the Times Union will be running a story about the replacement of the classic racist and/or bigoted terminology with the newer PC versions.

Is this a sign that the TU is joining us in the new century?

This is an epidemic in the restaurant business, incidentally.  I think the most common replacement code word for 'black customers' is 'canadians'.

QuoteCode Words.  Are they Just a short cut to Hatred?

"Used to veil harrassment in the workplace, these perjorative terms are reawakening stereotypes

Read all about this disturbing trend in Sundays Insight."

Ghetto-trash.

I dont consider it a code word though, it's a way of describing a demographic without lumping an entire race in.  Basically used in the same context of white-trash and can apply to whites as well. To some of the old timers, some of the slurs aren't really words of hate, that's just what they called people back in the day. But yeah, that's just a small exception.

I'm not sure how the service industry came up with Canadians, but that's just a way of  indicating they might not get as good of a tip. If anyone wants to throw the racist label out, i've got stats I took down from my service industry days to back up that statement :D Which is one of the reasons I got out of it, It can turn you prejudice when working for tips. Oh right, the shitty hours & not so great pay didn't help either.

(I can say shitty right? i know some want G-rated language on metrojax....)

Very interesting, JTA has it's own lexicon of diverse and useless words. There is an industry standard phrase known as "Choice" or "Quality" Rider, funny thing is, a rider in either of these groups could have been parked for the last 20 years,, they just don't use transit. The minute they DO USE TRANSIT, they are labeled "Choice" Riders.

Most systems call choice riders anyone who "could have" OR "would have" driven their car to work. But here, we have the urban unique status of pulling "choice" from non-riders that live in the hood. We better tread lightly on this .

The way JTA routs are laid out it was designed as a distributer to black labor to reach the money of Springfield, San Marco or Riverside-Ortega. Just before WWII Unions and other social efforts stgarted changing the landscape. The really strange part is, will we be the FIRST city where, "choice" means upward mobile white. It would be a shame to us, but wkl wake up in time.
