Bad News!  Hopefully he's better before the regular season.

Count wide receiver Jerry Porter out of Jaguars training camp and the entire preseason.

The team’s most high-profile free-agent acquisition, Porter is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a hamstring tendon that has been slow to heal, according to Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio.

The Jaguars are hopeful Porter will be ready for the Sept. 7 season opener at Tennessee.

“Jerry had a successful surgical repair to a hamstring tendon that had continued to bother him,” Del Rio said. “We expect a complete recovery in time for the regular season.”

Porter, 30, initially suffered the hamstring injury during an offseason practice in May, and it was originally diagnosed as a strain. Expected to enter the season as the Jaguars’ No. 1 receiver, Porter signed a contract worth more than $30 million at the start of free agency.

With Porter possibly out of the lineup for all of camp, the team will have to reshuffle its depth chart, which includes Reggie Williams as the No. 2 receiver and Dennis Northcutt as the third receiver. Williams or Northcutt likely will slide into No. 1 and No. 2 slots.

Former third-round pick Mike Walker and new acquisition Troy Williamson, who came to the Jaguars through a trade with the Minnesota Vikings, are the likely candidates to man the third spot and fourth spots. Matt Jones, who has an Aug. 11 trial date after being arrested last week and charged with felony drug possession, D’Juan Woods and John Broussard also are options at the position.

They went 11-5 without him last season so the season is not lost. If he misses the preseason and can be there in week 1, the impact is minimal. I just hope it doesn't linger.

Agreed. They'll be okay without him in preseason. They're also pretty deep receiver-wise and they still have a very solid running game.

even WITH Porter, i still think our receiving corps is lacking.  williams is medicore at best.  and that just puts us looking like the Panthers wide receiving corp...one good one and mediocre others.

Lol. I don't know if I'd go that far. You're a glass half empty kind of guy, Driven. Troy Williamson will surprise you I think. Maybe not. You're forgetting that the receivers, while viewed as mediocre by some, have a very talented and promising QB throwing to them this season and that makes a big difference. They definitely have something to prove this season. Plus, they are not going to all of a sudden become this huge passing offense team. Their running game is awesome and the core of their offense - all they have to do is make the other team worry about them having both a good run and the threat of a good passing game. True the effectiveness of the passing game is yet to be seen this season but if it's better than it was last season it's going to make a huge difference.

Williams had 10 td's in just his third season

tbf - you are right - the difference is a Garrard.  i was going to put that in there, but oh well..you did a good job summing that difference up.

wasn't that as the #1 receiver?  forgetting individual accolades for Williams, championship teams expect more out of their #1 receiver than 10 TDs, right?

It depends if your number one is Moss, Owens or Fitzgerald.

adamh0903

No there wasnt a number 1 receiver last year. There wouldnt be anyone on the team considered a #1 receiver last year, but 10 tds is still pretty strong. I think you are starting to see a more mature player than earlier in his career, and he could be the best blocking WR in the League. He will probably never live up to the hype of a 9th overall pick though

it was really a rhetorical question.  the answer is "Yes".  i can think of one exception:  the NE Patriots where they spread the ball out so well and like 4 or 5 guys have 10TDs at year end.

adamh0903

only one NE player had 10 tds or more, and he was one of the 3 copper mentioned

The colts number 1 wr.....had 10 tds

blizz01

Jimmy Smith never had 10 TDs in a season - pretty sure he was a #1 receiver......... ;)

Before we get to calling anything mediocore lets wait and see what these guys do on the filed first. Preseason hasnt even started yet!! :)
