Public Spaces: Downtown's Lack of Public Bathrooms



Today, finding a bathroom in an emergency downtown can be as problematic as finding a whale fisherman in Kansas. While one might be convinced that they exist in theory, the reality might be a series of disappointments.  As part of this week's series on urban public spaces we present a few points in favor of reopening public bathrooms in the public spaces of downtown.

Unity Plaza-It's not just a retention pond.
Prior to construction at a DIA Board meeting and building the Public Park that was given to them it was mentioned and pointed out to not be the RAM restroom situation. Those restrooms only opened when RAM is open.

I agree; public bathrooms are sorely needed downtown; lot of the merchants do not, and will not allow you to use their restrooms unless you are a customer (buying something). Another problem, and I am not profiling, is eventually there might be sex, drug, and other illegal or illicit activities going on. I remember back in the mid 70's when they had the public restrooms underground on the east end of hemming park, there was a lot of drug selling, using, homeless people sleeping in stalls, and sex activity going on there. Can't remember when they closed it, but it was not too long after that, I think in the late 70's after the renovation. Just a thought y'all.

Might need to regularly have security and/or police patrol(s) in the new restrooms to ensure those type activities don't happen.
