Poll: Jacksonville residents favor fully inclusive LGBT protections 64%-26%

I've been away for a while, but two weeks ago a new UNF poll found that Jaxsons support "expand[ing] the Human Rights Ordinance (HRO) to include anti-discrimination protection on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression in the areas of housing, employment and public accommodations" by 64%-26%.

This is an overwhelming percentage, but all polls since 2012 have shown that most Jacksonville citizens favor protections at least based on sexual orientation. However, this is the first clear indication that a majority of residents favor fully inclusive protections based on gender identity and expression - i.e., for transgender people. Given the anti-trans backlash that occurred at the town halls, and which has been stirred up by nationwide organizations, it's pretty eye-opening.

That said, as AG Gankarski noted, poll samples across all Jacksonville citizens, not those who are likely voters. Polls of likely voters have historically showed less support for protecting gender identity and expression.

That's not good news in the event the issue goes to referendum, but it should be good for showing the City Council and Mayor that a wide, unambiguous majority of Jacksonville residents support a fully inclusive HRO.

They both do suck on this issue, but Brown pulled strings behind the scenes with council members to torpedo the HRO in 2012. Now there's a lot more at play: national organizations fighting the HRO, and a movement to force a destructive referendum on us. This wouldn't be an issue today if the compromise bill had passed in 2012.

Brown had the spine of wet spaghetti. He never came out in favor, when he had the chance, to show TRUE leadership. Then his only plan to fix the pension was to raid JEA? He lacked vision, he lacked integrity and his lack of leadership cost him another 4 years.

Curry's not perfect, but then again neither was Austin, Godbold, Peyton or Delaney, but damn if Curry is not out in front on this Pension thing, its all the guy ever talks about, its ask if there are campaign bumper stickers and buttons being pushed out so people never forget that the Pension is the only damn issue til August.

The reason is probably that while most support the measures, they are less important to them than others, i.e. not the key reason to vote for a particular candidate (or not).
