Sound Transit announces 25-year expansion plan

SEATTLE — Sound Transit is introducing a new draft plan that would expand transit operations and light rail lines in the Puget Sound region. The agency's Sound Transit 3 proposal is a 25-year plan that would add 58 miles of light rail and 39 new stations to form a 108-mile system that could handle more than a half-million riders each day.

The proposal also calls for expansions to the Sounder Commuter Rail system through a capital improvement program that would extend service south to DuPont, Wash. The plan also calls for an increase in train capacity and improved access to train stations.

The details of the proposal calls for $50 billion in transportation investments that would be funded through voter-approved sales, motor vehicle excise, and property taxes for 25 years.

According to the agency, the proposal responds to strong region-wide support for additional mass transit opportunities between Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett. The region's population is expanded to grow by an estimated 1 million residents by 2040, the agency says.

The current proposal will seek public feedback and review through a series of public meetings and surveys beginning in April. Comments will be reviewed through April 29 and the agency will then adopt a final plan by June to ensure its meets the timeframe for voter consideration on Nov. 8.
