Fish Camps: What More Could You Ask For?



In the 1930s and ‘40s it was the lonely fisherman awaiting a nibble, his reel hanging over the river hoping for some action, who birthed the first fish camps. Originally, they were places where people could buy bait and rent tackle for a turn on the water and then later fillet and fry whatever they reeled in that day.  Check out Jville's celebrated fish camps after the Jump!

Clarks is definitely a staple in mandarin. I'm still going to make it out to Whiteys one of these days.

We grew up going to Whitey's and Clark's. Outback Crab Shack (which I would definitely add to the list) is a fun boat trip as well. North Beach Fish Camp is really just a seafood restaurant with the words 'Fish Camp' in the name although the food there is pretty good!

I grew up near Whitey's.  As kids we would rent jon boats and paddle up Swimming Pen Creek and go swimming.  I can't say that I'd go swimming in the creek now with all of the critters.  More recently I've rented kayaks at Whitey's and paddled the creek.  It's beautiful, especially where it branches off into two creeks.

  Back in the day there was a yard full of peacocks, goats, ducks and chickens for the kids. Best was the smoker by Hecksher Drive full of fresh mullet and roe.

  A little off topic but there was a kid selling peanuts to folks waiting for the ferry.

Really? Clark's is too far from Ortega? As a boater I say enjoy the ride as much as the destination. It's not that far and it's always fun on the boat.
If you're not a boater, get one

Kristin's On The Water recently closed down and has a bit of land along blanding where it crosses the Cedar River.  It could be turned into a fish camp if combined with the old Army/Navy store parcel.  Otherwise you have to retrofit one of the marinas.
