Those who think parking in downtown Jacksonville is difficult may want to read this article.

"Driving in the District [of Columbia] can be a nightmare. Now, the city is testing a program under which the price of parking at meters in one of the city's most popular neighborhoods would change based on demand.

This "surge pricing" means you could be paying $8 an hour to park in Chinatown-Penn Quarter at peak times.

You read that right. $8. An hour.

City officials say the idea is to reduce downtown traffic congestion, 25 percent of which, studies show, is caused by vehicles circling the block looking for a parking space. It is simple supply and demand, they say."

I encountered surge pricing in Calgary. But I only paid something like $4.50 an hour, and the overall potential fluctuation wasn't that big...maybe as much as $1.50 more per hour when in high demand.
