QuoteJACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Mathews Bridge was closed in both directions just before 8 a.m. by what was described as police activity.

No information was available about why the bridge was closed, but Channel 4's Nikki Preede reported traffic in the area was "a mess.

Police were diverting traffic headed downtown at Cesery and University boulevards, but westbound traffic was backed up to Atlantic Boulevard.

About two hours earlier, the Trout River Bridge of Main Street was closed to traffic in both directions after a car struck a pedestrian.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the woman driving a Ford Mustang was not hurt in the 6 a.m. incident.

"She drifted out of her lane, she struck the pedestrian -- he died at the scene," FHP Lt. Bill Leeper said. "She continued south, lost control, traveled across the northbound lanes out into a wooded area into a marsh, almost into the river."

A power pole was struck and electricity was out in the area. JEA crews were on the scene trying to restore power.

Police and state troopers were diverting traffic onto Interstate 95.
