Press is reporting that Caitlyn Jenner will be awarded the ESPY Courage Award in Sports.

Twitter is alive with objections believing that cancer suffered player Lauren Hill should have won the award post humously.  She died April 10.

Caitlyn was quoted as saying "what am I going to wear?" When notified of winning the award.

Eh, it's a purely subjective award.

Lauren Hill is certainly deserving, as is ESPN's own Stuart Scott.

That said, it's equally hard to argue against one of the most famous American Olympians of all time putting a face to transgender struggles.

You'll never make everyone happy, but in the case of Caitlyn Jenner, good for her.

Am I the only one who couldn't possibly care less about this subject? spuwho this is not a knock at you at all for posting this, I'm referring to Jenner. Who really cares if a former Olympic athlete/reality show star has a sex change? Why are Americans so consumed with this crap?
I feel like this is all just a distraction for us from the real important issues (NSA, droning, etc).

I can see how one could think that way, considering how invisible transgender people have had to be until very recently. All LGBTQ people, really. But it's no trivial issue for them, or their families, friends and allies. Famous people coming out and putting faces and names to trans issues is a pretty big deal in a world where many prefer to act as if those issues and the people behind them don't exist.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

I have always thought Jenner was an attention seeker (watch the Kardashians for 15 minutes). I am absolutely fine with her doing whatever she wants to do with her own body. However, the build up to the media is not about transgender rights, it's about Jenner being all about Jenner like she always has. You can change the way you look, decide you want to be a different gender, but you can't change the person.

you know someone will ask a candidate for '16 about this.  Hence why it is news.

A multi-millionaire former athlete who is only relevant today because of her daughters' trashy television show and who killed somebody 6 months ago with a truck gets the courage award. Just doesn't seem appropriate. And let's not ignore the fact that her coming out seems like one big publicity tour leading up to her new show on E!  First do the Diane Sawyer thing, then shoot glamour shots with Annie Leibovitz for VANITY FAIR,  and then ride the publicity wave until the premier of the new show.  But ESPN is in the entertainment and ratings business, and they Caitlyn Jenner accepting the ESPY will get a lot of attention.

I'm not saying that going public as a transgender person doesn't take courage, but I think there are others who better exemplify the spirit of the award.

Lauren Hill has a honorary jersey dedicated at the WNBA game and given to her family.
