Urban Connectivity: Hogans Creek parks



Parks can play an important role in the urban landscape. Beyond typical recreational uses, urban parks offer people a refuge from city life, a place where they can relax and get away, socialize, and be in contact with nature. At the same time, urban parks can be the focal point of their surrounding community. Whether a venue for stewardship activities or cultural fairs, a park can help bring a community together and strengthen its identity.

I wish we could get the city to do something about this. I remember someone suggesting we turn it into a San Antonio Riverwalk type thing. A fabulous idea, but also if they would just take care of the darn thing that would be fine with me.

The river-walk in San Antonio was originally just a failed storm-sewer system that was turned into what it is today with a series of locks, walkways, etc. It would take much, much less investment to fix Hogan's Creek. Of course, San Antonio had the benefit of FDR's WPA, which isn't around any more. But if our parks could be similarly spiffed up, hotels, condos, restaurants, retail, and other desirable development would be likely to follow as it did in San Antonio.
