Council incumbent Kimberly Daniels faces 3 challengers in At-large Group 1 race

This year's race for the City Council At-Large Group 1 seat promises to be a colorful one, even in the sometimes unusual and unique world of Jacksonville politics.

Democratic incumbent Kimberly Daniels, known as much for her work on the council as her background as an ex-prostitute and a minister who performs exorcisms, faces a formidable challenge from Republican Anna Brosche.

Brosche, an accountant and political newcomer, is running an orchestrated campaign that's raised more money than any other council candidate in this election and is backed by the local business community.

Thanks for posting this Gloria.  It is an excellent article.  The race in this district has 4 candidates, there are only two that really figure into  which can be one that is very positive for Jacksonville or one that would be a negative statement of competence on the part of Jacksonville's voters.  Those two candidates are women.  There is Demon Buster incumbent Kimberly Daniels and a very competent challenger in the person of Anna Lopez Broche.

Anna Lopez Broche is a classy lady of intellect and well respected business woman.  She has garnered the support of the business community and average citizens, many of whom have had enough of Kimberly Daniels style of representation.

QuoteBrosche, an accountant and political newcomer, is running an orchestrated campaign that's raised more money than any other council candidate in this election and is backed by the local business community.

QuoteIn television ads and an interview with the Times-Union, Brosche touted her 20-year career as a certified public accountant, saying she has the financial background to help grow and attract businesses, fix city budget woes and make wise investments with taxpayers' money.

If elected, she said she feels "very confident that I will be very active, very present and very deep on the issues."

"My entire professional background is making sure numbers are right, looking at the stories the numbers tell and looking at the questions that aren't being asked," Brosche said.

Brosche said the city won't be able to address quality-of-life issues and promote economic development until it get its financial house in order.

A crucial first step toward that goal is finding a solution to pay off the city's $1.62 billion pension debt, one of several City Hall issues she said she's become very familiar with.

QuoteIn the money race, Brosche leads her opponents, having raised $179,800 and spending $130,000. Daniels has raised $115,700 — including $73,000 she lent to her campaign — and has spent $51,800.

Incumbent Kimberly Daniels, shown here on her book cover touting her supernatural powers is vying for another term on the council.  Many people including myself do not want to see her return to politics with plenty of good reasons not the least of which are her bigotry and religious fanaticism.

Quote
During her first term on the council, Daniels was chairwoman of the Public Health committee for two years and is serving this year on the Finance Committee, an influential body that plays a major role in crafting the city budget. She's missed 16 meetings during her tenure.

Daniels is the founder of a church in Northwest Jacksonville and Kimberly Daniels Ministry International, under which she has traveled the world to speak. She also published a number of books, including "Clean House, Strong House," "The Demon Dictionary" and "From Mess to A Miracle."

Daniels, whose sermons can be heard on local radio and seen on YouTube, was criticized during the 2011 election for her remarks opposing homosexuality. She has said critics have falsely portrayed her as hostile against gays.

In 2012, she was featured in an episode of "Taboo," a show on the National Geographic channel. During the segment, she's shown speaking in "tongues" and wildly performing exorcisms at her church. She also shares details about her troubled past as a drug addict and prostitute and speaks about how religion helped transform her life.

QuoteDaniels has raised $115,700 — including $73,000 she lent to her campaign — and has spent $51,800

Note: Actually Daniels has loaned her own campaign $90,481.00 which you may notice is an odd amount.  She loaned herself 50k,  7k, another 7k and then the really strange amount of $19,481.00.  Most self loans candidates make are in rounded numbers.  I checked her expenditures and there is no expenditure or combination of expenditures that match the amount exactly which made me wonder about this loan. She has taken 10k back out of her account which interestingly if redeposited to a personal account will not trigger the over 10k flag to the IRS, only another 9,481.00 to go in loan return on that transaction will also not trigger the 10k flag to IRS.  Just something to ruminate on.

The public may also not realize that Congresswoman Corrine Brown and Kimberly Daniels have formed quite a close friendship with Brown donating to her campaign in spite of Brown being a figurehead for Democrats and their policies.  Daniels voted against the HRO and has been vocal about her disdain for the GLBT community.  This new friendship may come in part because Daniels has footed the bill for a nice glossy magazine publication called "Onxy" which will feature a broad expose about Brown and a smaller mention of Daniels, said magazine to be circulated through local churches and organizations. Some alliances can be personally fruitful.
