Vinik unveils billion-dollar vision for downtown Tampa

Tampa Bay Lightning Owner Jeff Vinik's billion-dollar development plan is one that could transform a desolate corner of downtown Tampa into a thriving urban neighborhood anchored by a major corporate campus.

Vinik on Wednesday unveiled plans to build nearly 3 million square feet of commercial space on the 25 acres between Amalie Arena and the Selmon Expressway that he has assembled over the last several years.

The development plans, which total $1.07 billion, are backed by Microsoft Founder Bill Gates' Cascade Investment LLC. Vinik's team estimates the project will generate $35 million in annual tax revenue for Hillsborough County.

Pretty cool looking development. That area could also eventually be home to a new baseball park for the Rays as well.

This likely kills a new Rays baseball park in the immediate area, but there are other areas nearby that could be developed.

IMO, there are aspects of this development plan that should be incorporated into a plan for the Shipyards. Would love to see a Medical School and new corporate HQ as well.

I saw the size listed as 40 acres. This could easily be a model for the shipyards. You just need similar buy in from the city, financiers, and the developer in Jax.

If it ends up in the downtown Tampa area, the Rays new ballpark would be located about 1/2 mile north off Nebraska Avenue...there is currently a housing project there.

I meant in the general area, not in this specific development. Alot of Rays fans see Vinik as their knight in shining armor save the franchise.

I like the medical school component as well.

A good chunk of the buildings highlighted in orange and the green spaces shown are already there. These include the Marriott, the Lightning's arena, Channelside, greenspace along the channel, etc. It appears this development address the "Maxwell House/Jail" side of the waterfront. That's most likely the 40 acres, they're addressing. It appears to be a pretty cool project, plus it keeps the historic flour mill in operation. I also love that they are putting the old street grid back in because the construction of Brorein Street literally ripped that area apart.
